I am not sure if this is atypical to laptops or not, but I was installing Adobe Master Collection last night, and I noticed that if you put any pressure at all on left side of the palm rest above the slot load DVD while typing, it compresses down on the spinning disk and causes that horrible grinding sound.....

The top decks are very mushy, no magnesium framework to support it. I can only say, don't press down when burning! Also, close the screen by the middle don't grab from the edge to close.

I have noticed this too. I was burning a DVD of ubuntu last evening and noticed that when I tried to move the machine I got an I/O Error. Luckily it was during the verification stage so the disc was already burned, but it definitely is touchy.

On another note, has anyone noticed the metal trim piece surrounding the keyboard bulging up on the sides? It isn't the copper colored part, but the part just outside that between the keyboard and headphone port. I had my FX in my car this morning and wonder if it happened because of the cold temperature. I am debating about trying to get an exchange at Best Buy but it probably isn't likely they have one to exchange me since this machine went on sale again..

I have something similar in the upper right above the VGA connector. This is in addition to an askew space bar and upward bulge in the plastic along the right upper corner of the touchpad (see my post about "warped keyboard"). However, the machine runs strong so I decided to live with it instead of risking getting another one with actually performance issues. Still love it. May wait till Gateway's completely out of these and try to get them to replace it with the next model under warranty.

Hmm, well I think I am going to try and go to my Best Buy and get an exchange today. Maybe if they don't have any in stock anymore I'll just do a return and then wait for the 6860fx to arrive.

i don't have any of these issues. i've actually set the laptop upside down on my bed while it was burning, and it doesn't really flex all that much on the palm rest/touch pad area.

I also think the Optiarc drives are low-quality when it comes to disc reading. I was trying to load Office Enterprise 2007 from a DVD from the "Action Pack" set of MS products. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get Vista to actually start to install Office 2007 - it would hang after a LONG time to bring up the autoplay options, then when I selected to start setup.exe, it would never initialize after repeated minute-after-minute of spool-up and wind-down on the drive.

I finally decided I wanted Office Pro 2003 more, and that disc loaded and installed without issue.
