Well I pulled the trigger on a 128GB SSD for my 6860. Stated at 260 read and 195 write speeds with a 0.1ms latency... faster by a great deal than even my 7200rpm drive RAID array.

    I'm so happy :p

So at this point the only upgrade i can even do to my 6860 is to change out the panel for a 1920x1200 screen.

I think i'm running out of stuff to do before the nehelam FX laptop :p

Here is what you need to do with your FX...

Raid the SSDs, get a 1920x1200 and then backlite the keyboard, and upgrade the speakers... Make it a totally home brew laptop :D

I need more storage space than a normal person can afford with SSD's... though RAID 0 with 2 500GB drives would rock, it would also be unusable in the FX due to raid controller/sata limits. The single drive i have will pretty much max out the sata connectors we have.

As to the speakers... i'm afraid thats a lost cause. laptop speakers suck and i have some nice headphones :p

But the back light... hrm thats a possibility, but will be very hard to do with how are keyboards are made. But i'll look into laser engraving to see if i can "burn" out the keys and back light them using the express port power lines.

And yeah 1920x1200 is more than likely my next upgrade :)

Modding Speakers will be a great thing.

I will open a topic soon.

There's already a post with glow in the dark keyboard letters you can put on your laptop. They'll look pretty much the same as a backlit keyboard except they don't use any power.

What SSD did you go with? Read/Write speeds sound like a vertex but the 128 makes me think it's not.

If you can figure out how to do it, i'm all for it. Might even try it myself if it seems worth it after your research/attempt.

Yeah, the glowing letter look really nice, but i've never been a sticker fan. I prefer things more permanent. Plus if i can figure out how to back light the keyboard it will give me an excuse to go ahead and change out the other LED's to a color besides orange... go with yellow to stick with the batman theme :p

I went with the Supertalent Ultradrive. I was originally going to go with the falcon... but newegg ran out. But its essentially the same drive as the vertex, just higher sequentials. I'm going to have to see if its 4k rights are high enough for me, but other than that i'll mostly be doing reads from the drive (games and PDF's) so the OS should have litttle to do writing-wise except day to day operations

    What limits would those be?

FYI, I had a two port eSATA PC card for my P6860-FX that allowed for doing external RAID 0 that actually gave much better performance than the onboard Intel controller paired with internal RAID 0 HDD's did. I was using it to RAID two 320GB drives as a data backup option, but I supposed it could also be used as a main system drive (though an external one).

The limits would be SATA II limits. With a RAID i would be looking at 500MB reads and about 400MB writes... not something that i can use internally (wish i could though) :p

By the way its installed and running. I love SSD's :D Everything is so fast now
