I've been searching around forums and have found a few sparse comments regarding ability to play this game on various settings. Looking to see if we can find a consensus among owners of this lappy on what best settings to play the game at.

I am fairly new to PC gaming (usually play my XBox 360) so don't fully understand all the choices. I basically have been playing with Textures and Objects on Very High with shadows, physics and shaders (what's that?) on Medium. The entire right column (most of which I don't know what they mean - ie volume and game effects?) are running at Very High. Resolution is native 1440x900.

The game looks nice but I have to admit, I'm not overly impressed with the graphics. This may be because I am used to playing games with the XBox on a 50 inch 1080I/720P Samsung. I will hook the Gateway up to the TV at some point to see what the Jungles look like on a much bigger screen.

Personally I think I would prefer to sacrifice frame-rate a bit for better looking graphics as long as it is playable (I am not too picky).

Also do some people play with different (lower) settings when switching to online multiplayer as I would think performance and framerate would be more important with online gaming.

I apologize if this should have been posted on the gaming forum. Mods please move if that is appropiate.

    Thanks ahead for responses.

What makes it look good it shadows and shaders.
Bump those up to high and it should look great.

i don't think shadow makes a big difference graphics if you set it on medium.

for crysis, you can get maybe around 20 FPS if you run it at all high 1440*900. i wouldn't say that's playable though

textures high, object quality high, shaders medium for a much better framerate for very little visual loss. then just play around with the other settings like motion blur which i turned off cause it was lame imho. most of the other settings physics, water ,post process , dont take that much of a hit to the FPS just mainly shaders are the real heavy hitters.

After bumping shaders (whatever that is) and shadows up to high, I noticed a pretty positive effect graphically but framerate definitely took a hit. I put shadows back down to Medium and still think it looks better with an improved FR.

Can anyone tell me exactly what shaders are?

Also how do people measure framerate and what is considered good, bad, etc?

As always appreciate the patience with the newie.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shader

    and http://hankfiles.pcvsconsole.com/answer.php?file=484

good framerate for smooth gameplay would be 30+ fps. anything lower, and it will appear jumpy to you.

Well I take it back - this game looks incredible. Walking down the river and just looking ahead to the mountains - Wow!

Can't wait for the HDMI switch and cable I purchased on Ebay arrives so I can hook this game up to my 50 inch DLP.

BTW: Running on all very high except for Shaders on high and shadows on medium. Generally running great with some hiccups during heavy action. To me the beautiful scenery is worth the occassional slow down, but to each his own.

I would be careful with "Very high" settings. You are new to the game. The first 2 hours are fine, but after that, it gets intense, and unless you are playing on 1024x768, the CPU just bottlenecks "Very high".

Nope, and the demo ran about like that for me, too. The game, patched to 1.2 runs twice as good as the demo.

Thanks for the tip - I will definitely look out for when the game starts to ratchet up. In the meantime will enjoy the perty vistas* on very high settings.

    *No pun intended.

Because they're pissed that we 68xx users can get our game on for so cheap. :D

And after playing through to the end, everything else, with the exception of possibly COD4, pales in comparison. This game is the standard to which all others should strive to be.

The CPU makes a difference too, some of the gamers here have x9000, T9300, etc... so the FPS will be up to about mid 30's with all high or more if OC
I like to turn on all high except motion blur which is useless and med for water

If below 30 FPS, the game runs too slow to be enjoyable
