I bought a coolermaster notebook cooler and finally decided to try some overclocking. Mostly because there is times in COD MW2 where my framerate drops below 25FPS and drives me crazy. Worried about temps i decided to wait until i had a coolerpad.

I just turned my GPU through EVGA Precision tools up to 699/1747/900 and scored 8782. What I noticed was my SM 2.0 score actually dropped compared to stock. I have come to the conclusion that the 9800M GTS is being held back by the weak processor so im going to order a X9100 tomorrow and retest. my score did increase by 175 points the framerates appeared identical to non overclocked 9800M gts scores.

I saw this on one of my desktop pcs. I had an AMD Sempron paired with an ATI 5770. The highest score I could get was 10,900 and any overclocking on the video card didnt make hardly any effect on my 3dmark06 score, meanwhile every 100mhz i could squeeze out of the sempron made a nice difference in the overall score. The sempron topped out at 3.8ghz, but after switching to an 955 quad core processor my score jumped from 10,900 to 16,800 or so.

If you get a x9100 you'll need to underclock to keep temps low.

You are incorrect. I am running 3.06ghz and the gateway fan doesnt even come on. Like I said i am using a coolermaster laptop cooler. My new highest 3dmark06 score is 11,866 i am disappointed my cpu wont overclock. I have no overclock options in the BIOS and throttle stop wont let me increase my multipler! GRRr.

Oh well, im much happier with my cod mw2 framerate! its like butter now.

Wrong. Many users have overclocked the X9100 in the gateway fx series and keep their temps under control. Gateway did a good job on keeping the GPU and CPU cool, I don't even use a cooler. Now you might have to underclock a X9100 if it was in your asus because you only have one heatsink/fan for the CPU/GPU.

Mine X9100 idles at 24 celcius. Gaming not over 60 celcius. Without cooler just lifted the back of notebook. GPU and NB highest 70 celcius. With CPU and GPU OC, and ICD on cpu and NB.

I dont have problems with temps but my gateway had only one heatsink/pipe that covered both the CPU/ GPU and there was only one fan blowing on that heatsink/pipe. Ive heard other people have seperate heatsinks for GPU/CPU on their gateways.. ill take a picture when i get home.

24C does not sound realistic to me at all, is it possible your sensor is configured/calibrated incorrectly. i mean 24C is cooler then ambient temps! 24C is 75F ...

My AMD's always read wrong temps on 3rd party sensors. it would show idle temps of like 25C and under load of 40C but when i installed the utility included with motherboard it idled at like 38C and was like 53C under load which seemed more realistic...

that heatsink you are referring to covers the CPU and northbridge chipset.

the GPU in the 7805u has its own heatsink and fan; it's the one located to your left hand side, just before the 2 usb ports. It is not readily accessible unless the notebook is fully disassembled.
