Yesterday I tried to run the Grid on my new lappy and after 15 minutes of gaming, the HW monitor was showing 101 celcius degrees (200+ fahrenheit) for the GPU and the rest was below 60 degrees. The laptop was on a table not on my lap and I wasn't blocking anything. Did any of you who own this computer had this problem? By the way I was playing on ultra high settings at 1900 resolution.
Also the fan at the left side is almost always on and it is annoying because it is working in a "1 second on, 1 second off" routine. IT not only makes an annoying noise but also makes me think that there is a problem with the fan settings.
Can we change the fan settings on this computer without flashing the bios?
Thanks

That sounds extremely high, you might have a defective unit.
I would return it for a new one if possible. -
return it asap for new one.sounds defective.better be on the safe side.
-
@alitunay
It definitely has to be defective. Return it ASAP and get a replacement. -
yep the fan control is probably defective resulting in these high temps
-
Well the idle temperatures are pretty low like high 30s or low 40s. But I tought the GPU would undervolt it self in case of an overheating. Plus the fans should be either running or not running right? If I get another person to say return it I am on my way to bestbuy. Thanks

You have to prop the backend up of the laptop up, just putting it on a flat surface still does not give it the proper breathing room from my experience atleast when gaming . The fan thing is different though, but i have read from a couple others the weird fan activity of the machine but more at idle not when gaming where the fans shouldnt be intermittent and should be running full blast especially at those temps . 101 was close to the thermal throttling or just shutting the machine down but should not destroy it since they are designed to go up to 105 degrees .
-
ok thanks. I gave it a try at a lower resolution and on a flat countertop where the bottom is also cool and got 71C has the high temp. I guess a dining table with a thin table cover is not ideal for these laptops to breathe
-
The feet on these machines are just not thick enough to give it proper ventilation IMHO . Just take a couple of bottle caps even and put them under the feet .You could get something like this or just make it yourself

Don't lower the graphics settings. If it doesn't perform at good temps with maximum load it needs to be replaced.
-
yeah there should be no problems with the max settings at all, return it and get a new one.
-
I thought I would just check for you and downloaded HW monitor to run some tests. I ran Crysis at very high @1920*1200 and I couldn't get the temps to go above 78c, I played for about 20mins. I've been quite disappointed with Nvidia lately for the amount of defective cards they are coming out with :-/. Sorry to say this but you probably have a defective card

At 1920x1200 with most things set to medium except textures and water set to high i get 30fps through out most of the game which is darn good .
-
How does Oblivion and Mass Effect feel then? Is it smooth with AI on screen? -
wierd, i can only run very high at those FPS on 1024x768...
-
-
Oblivion is very smooth pretty much maxxed out and No AA @ wuxga res . Mass effect the fps vary pretty greatly like in the citadel where theres tons to look at it will go as low as 27ish and when your on some distant planet its 62 just depends on the situation .
-
-
Now, I'm really hyped about this machine.
1920x1200 resolution on Mass Effect and Oblivion without AA with smooth fps = AWESOME! -
Well the temperature issue is on hold since I tried raising the computer from the table by couple cms and with all of the original settings (1900 resolution, 4xAA and high details on everything else) it maxed 81C. But I'll keep an eye on it since even if the fans were blocked it should have stopped working at 95C or so and shouldn't let it go to 101C.
One other question tough, is there anything out there which would test the brightness of the screen. It may be just me but the left side of the screen looks dimmer than the right side to me. I don't know it may be my eyes but is there anyhting that can test this?
Thanks -
im not sure if theres any programs that can do such a thing but one way of testing it is have someone else look at and give there opinion
.

never put the notebook on a table cloth or any fluffy surface,
hope you are good now, but if the fan is turning off when your temps are still high (60+) there is something wrong there. -
I demand screenshots of fps + 1920x1200 resolution in Oblivion and Mass Effect please.
-
-
81c for a high end GPU in a thin laptop isnt too bad. Get a NZXT cryo cooler and youll be set for long gaming sessions. As for the fan going on and off every second, there is something wrong with that and Id have to send it in.
-
my cpu idles at 38-42
gpu@40-44
and as said above gpu max@81 is ok , hotter than i get on the p6381 but i dont get to 1900x1200 so it is acceptable.
i still think the fan control is f^cked
btw i use a zalman nc-1000 notebook cooler -
yeah, it is fuc3ed, i hope a BIOS update is released to keep the fans running faster.
-
Are fans problematic for everybody?
-
^, i just dont think they run as fast as they should be at certain temps, mine dont even really kick in on my CPU until it jumps over 80C.
-
My 7811 seemed to be a little hot too, but the gpu maxes out around 77 C and when I prop it up for better ventilation it drops down to about 65. So yes I would definitely get it exchanged.
-
Good thing I bought a cooler for this bad boy.
-
My fans seem to be in working order....cept when I am doing idle tasks they start up for like a second and turn off right away. Kinda annoying sometimes.
-
Yes, the fan cycling is a known issue (here on the forums). Hopefully Gateway will release a BIOS update to address that.
-
I'm on my third one (because of screen issues) and I'm amazed at how cool all of them have run even after being left to run games all night. I didn't get exact temperatures but I've never had the case anywhere near hot - the most any of them got was barley warm. I also haven't used any coolers or anything to raise the 7811.

With how people are complaining about hard drive temps, I'm thinking RAIDing two 7200.2 200GB drives and putting them right next to one another isn't going to help operating temperatures.
-
The only problem I could foresee is the fact that the HD temp is already high (~53-60 C) and a 2nd hard drive may exacerbate the problem. tallan, what temps are you getting?
-
I just ran CPUID and here are my temps (Max/Min C):
ACPI: 50/39
CPU: 47/33 idle: 38
GPU: 71/41 idle: 43
HDD: 42/33 idle: 42
Note that I just used Freestone Group's Video Card Stability Test for about 10 mins and my HDD is a Hitachi 7200 rpm SATA/150 80gb drive. I have yet to test it with the stock Seagate Momentus 7200.2 drive. Are these average for what you guys are getting? -
I know my 6831 was hot after I installed a X7900 CPU (oc'ed to 3 GHz). The fan ran constantly. It was worth it though for the performance.
-
When I am running the Folding@home gpu client my gpu temps go to about a max of 84. Been running it for days w/o problem
-
Never mind guys. I purchased 7 more of these computers and the first one I got was the only one that had a problem with the heating. Undervolted one to 0.9125 and temps never go above 70 anymore. Idles around 35C for CPUs and 40C for the GPU. The HDD can go upto 60C after 8 hours of usage but nothing to worry about. Once you shut it down or do something that does not require and HDD activity it goes back to 40s.
-
^ Why in the world would you buy 7 of them!?
-
Business...
-
So Notebook Hardware Control works on these? If not, what are you using to undervolt?
-
I use RM Clock to undervolt.
-
So what are the normal temperatures? I'm showing
cpu-35c
gpu-47-50c
hdd-47c
I have skype on. And earlier with skype off i played crysis for 30mins at full and at high a little jittery showing:
cpu-36c
gpu-72c
hdd-nvr went over 51c.
While I was changing settings gpu jumped to 92c and there until closed game. Is all this normal? Just purchased yesterday. -
i think i have overheating problem too. playing call of duty 4 online, only on 1024xsometin aaX4. at the beginning it was fine, i was gettin 100-200fps and 70-80celcius. but after some playing time (~20mins) fan really kicked in, my fps dropped to 10-50 and gpuz showed 100-108 celcius. is this overheating or what? thanks
Overheating problem with P-7811!!
