P 171S FX being phased out?

I was really keen on this model and so I spoke to Gateway yesterday but the rep there said something that caused me much concern.

She said that they would phase the 171S out, and there won't be anything to replace it.

In short, there won't be a 172S. Now I'm really concerned, because it has gone into 'limited availability'.

Anyone else hear anything on this matter, that the 171S won't be replaced?

Do you think she was bluffing to get me to place an order. She did seem quite insistent.

 

I called them, but the rep that I spoke to didn't really seem to know anything about computers except that a bigger number is better... I went on the Gateway Chat and got a bit more information, but the rep didn't seem to want to provide the exact hard drive size.

In short, seems like the P172S FX is coming out according to three reps out of seven.

Release Date: April 17th
CPU: T5750
Hard Drive: 160 gig 7200 rpm
Memory: 3 gig
Price: $1399 This is the only rep that gave me the price so if anyone else could confirm that, that would be great!

Somehow I have a feeling they aren't going to have 2 models which are nearly exactly alike, one for retail and one for direct sale.

The P6380 or something, the new retail version seems to have these exact specs. I am afraid they are going to merge the 171S and the retail into 1 new model.

And there will be nothing in the $1600 price range with somewhat better specs than the retail.

 

Gateway will have a P-172s fx, and yes it will bbe close to the retail version. I posted some information on this on a diffrent thread. I believe on "New info on 6860 fx and other new fx NBs"
