Is the only difference between the Best Buy exclusive (6831 FX) and the 171S FX the processor? Also, if I buy one of these computers, within half a year or so will there be new laptops out for roughly the same price but better?

I'd have to say pricing out any new laptop with an 8800 in it is at least 2k toss in the 3GB of ram and you're looking at 2300ish for a sager, or the like (3k+ for an XPS 1730)

Anyway, the difference is the Processor, the slot loading DVD player, and the Finger print reader. personally one of the first things I'd upgrade (even with the S-FX) is to a Penryn processor, with it being a direct easy swap and 45nm its going to net you some much better speed with better battery life.

especially if you do a penryn swap this laptop SHOULD hold its value (depending on how severe the HDD issues become which is again an easy swap)

What is a slot loading DVD player? Would you recomend getting this laptop then, or wait and see what is going to be coming out in the next couple of months? I don't really know how fast better laptops come out.

slot loading DVD player is like the Slot loaders on the wii and PS3, instead of a Tray it's just a slot it loads in to.

and I have to say 1350 for any laptop with an 8800 in is an amazing deal. I can't see it losing its value for awhile
