I spoke with a representative from Gateway, and I was told that an educator would receive around 5% give or take if they purchased the P-171X FX Edition. It doesn't seem like much but at least it is something. I forgotten about asking them about what discount a student would receive.

I also asked the representative about the sale at Best Buy and was told that he/she would try to match the price as closely as possible. I'll find out about how close to the price tomorrow that this person can match it at.

I was also told that there would be alot of promotions tomorrow so I have my expectations pretty high on price!

I know that no one could probably beat that Best Buy FX sale, and really the only main difference between this and the S series is the CPU for the added cost of $350 dollars, and the X series for the CPU and monitor for the added cost of $750 dollars... I'd probably buy the X series if it was around $1600-$1800.

Has there been anyone else who spoke with a Gateway rep and gotten a quote or any other useful information?

Price matching at Best Buy is completely on a whim of either the employee or the manager. Do your best job of sucking up and hope you get lucky.

BTW, why is an educator buying a gaming laptop :p.

Hey man I use to work for BB here in Canada and they were always more than willing to price match - that's one of their gimmicks - bring in an ad or something that shows a competitor with a lower price they match it, no question.

It differs from store to store, who you talk to, and how it affect the margin.

I just took a look right now... that estimated shipping date sounds like a pretty long time... I don't know if I should buy it now... a month seems like a long time - and by that time other manufacturers could do some competitive pricing... not too sure what to do... just wait, or buy the best buy laptop, or buy the Gateway® P-171X from Gateway and wait till March 10th?

I just want to have a great laptop so that I could work with the tools that I already have at home, and the macbook that they issued me... well, let's just say I would like to work on a more powerful computer.

Also, I could show my colleagues that there are great laptops than macbook pros and cheaper too. ;)

The person that I talked to had given me 15% off the Gateway® P-171X FX, edition, but I heard on another thread that they were given 20% off for this laptop?

Is the P-171 FX a rebranded Clevo/Sager model? Kind of looks like the NP5793/570RU model.

I think the 1681FX version is the retail version, where they build and ship out to stores.
