I have had this laptop for just a hair over one year. No problems whatsoever, until this morning. Vista will boot but once you try to do something (access hard drive, connect to network) you get BSOD and then it reboots....and you start over again. Of course, my support with Gateway is over and I didn't purchase warranty (that's for pessimists, right? - haha).

Can someone point me to resources to try and troubleshoot this? TIA

P.S. The only thing that has recently changed was I uninstalled Kaspersky 7 and put v 9 on it...that was two weeks ago though and there was never any problem with installation or afterwards, until today.

Is there an error code associated with the BSOD?

Hmmm weird. Yes tell us the code.

Have you re-installed since you have had the laptop? If not I would suggest doing that, because once my BSODs started the thing that usually fixed them was that.

it is a "stop error." System_Services_Exception, 0x0000003B it says it is doing a memory dump, and then it quickly goes to 100% and the screen is gone

When I first got the laptop I did a clean vista install, it has worked flawlessly up until today.

Thank you both for the quick replies.

When Vista comes up after reboot it says

"Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" and then if I click on view problem it lists three dump files, but as soon as I try to access any of these files (or even begin click through to find them) the BSOD comes up again.

Any or choices besides reinstall Vista (cuz obviously I will lose whatever on the drives now)? Thanks again.

In case you have not considered this: Buy an SATA dock or some other SATA to USB connection and access the HD to retrieve your data. Twenty bucks or so and a great investment.

I would guess you are looking at a reinstall. Try a repair install that will not overwrite you data. But I would try to get your data off first.

Syngensmyth, will the SATA dock work?

Right now, every time I try to access the HD (or anything else for that matter) it just reboots.....if I just let windows come up and "sit" for a few mins it inevitably reboots as well. Can the SATA dock still grab my data without windows working?

You will need a working windows machine. Just plug the drive in and access it through that windows machine. One caveat is sometimes people have trouble with some dock/attachments and certain drives. I have always had it work. Be sure it will take the laptop drive. As with all things computing and life ... inconsistencies abound.

Although time consuming try a boot to safe mode and go back 2 weeks or so.............
