    All,

I can't find anything specific to this in the forums, so I thought I'd post and share.

I have been installing Vista 64 on my P-172X-FX and I discovered that if you install the Gateway D20253-001 driver package for the IDT/Sigmatel audio driver it will prevent Vista SP1 from showing up on Windows Update.

I did a little bit of digging and found this is a known issue and there are even KB articles on Microsoft's support site about it. What you need to do is remove the drivers through control panel then run Windows Update to get SP1 to show. Once you install SP1, you can put the drivers back.

Apparently the reason for this is that there is a known problem with Vista and drivers older than a certain version (I can't find the minimum version number) and Gateway's drives are in fact of the older variety.

I am installing SP1 now and will be installing the Gateway drivers again shortly (though Vista seems to provide a basic, working driver on it's own).

Anyway, I wanted to share this info in case anyone encounters this. There are a few bits of good driver installation advice in threads on this site. Perhaps a comprehensive guide would be good to have stickied.

Flynnaz had posted a link to a page to the IDT website in a few threads here but the link no longer works. However, I did find this which may or may not have been the same:

The easiest way around it is to download and run the stand-alone SP1 update rather than upgrading through Windows Update.
