Hello all,
After reading several posts on this forum, I think I have a pretty good idea of what to do upon my notebook's arrival. It'll of course come with vista 32 (I've never used vista - and have not heard too thrilling reviews :/) but hope that with the below little tweaks it'll still perform well. The laptop is purely for gaming.
Here's my list, any comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated:
1) Use recovery console and make back-up dvd
2) use msconfig and windows defender tool to turn off all non-microsoft start-up programs
3) use a third party program or windows un-installer to remove as much gateway bloat-ware as possible (including the anti-virus)
4) remove existing display driver - reboot - driversweeper - install 17x.xx
driver
Questions:
a) anybody have a direct link to the video driver, and is there a special install method?
b) Do I disable auto-update?
Anything else I should be aware of as far as tweaks?
Thanks again.

The 172x-fx has 4gb of ram I think? If that's the case, you may want to install vista 64-bit, which I also believe comes with the recovery cd. That should let your system utilize the full 4gb available.
and make sure to DL something like ccCleaner to scrub out the registry after you uninstall all that bloatware -
I think vista 32/46bit comes with P-6080fx only, becuase it comes with 64bit to start with.

go brag to friends.

Thought about the 64bit - too bad no cd I guess. About how much ram will actually be usauble with vista 32?
-
-
its actually around 3.5ish
-
My PC only recognizes 3.25 of my 4gb of Ram, so I guess 3.5 sounds about right.
-
Figured the system can see about 3.5gb, but how much is actually usable - as I'm sure Vista takes up a big chunk doesn't it?
-
my vista uses ~ 1.1 just on desktop with a few background programs like kaspersky, trillian. but i havnt optimized my vista yet. too lazy.
P-172x FX "first things first list"...suggestions??
