So, I just ordered my 172x-fx. I'm stoked. I'm an IT professional and despite my initial dislike of gateway, the value of the P series was undeniable.
For those looking up info, I'll post more details as I get the box (it's going to be a while =(.. like a month + ), but I would like to mention that the Gateway sales team is very great to deal with. Ask for Rico or Tyson (my rep.). If you sing the right song you can get 10% off.
In this case it paid for the Taxes and shipping, I ended up out the door done at 1999 bucks. Very knowledgeable and straightforward.

I have one question for the old pros though.
Can I make this an XP box? Does gateway support me going back to XP instead of Vista should I choose?
I don't imagine performance to be an issue with this beast, but I had awful experiences with Toshiba support on my last laptop.
I've read of people doing dual boot, and I might like to do that, I'd just like to know how easily it was to obtain drivers (besides video.. LaptopVid2go ftw) for XP.

Thanks ahead of time, and I will run a full review with benchmarks when I get my laptop, you can be !@#$ sure of that!
    :D

I ask about this to a gateway sales rep, he said the machine was designed for vista, and at the moment there is no XP support. So if i choosed to install xp, I would be responsible for finding all the necessary drivers for the machine. I do believe there are people that have done it, so if you can't find a driver just post someone should be able to point you to the right direction.

I was pretty sure that was the case, it's not really a problem... eventually we're going to be on Vista anyway, just was kinda hoping they supported XP for the rig too.
    Oh well!, thanks
