I have recently purchased the P-173XFX from gateway. My questions is i want to know what is the fastest cpu chip i can put into this with out having to do a bios update? If i have to do a bios update is it hard to do and do i need to match voltages? Isn't this just a chip swap? Of course i know that it would void my warranty and i need to put some artic silver down.

My primary purpose for this rig is gaming(flight sim x, cod4, world in conflict) and my secondary purpose is for spread sheets on Excel.

Any and all info would be great. thanks in advance.

    x9000 is the Alpha-dog
x7800 is the best bang for buck
    t9300 is the coolest

    no bios update is needed

doesn't void your waranty if you keep your old one and swap it as nothing happened before you send it back

royk50 hit the nail on the head.

Its a pretty simple process and you should be able to complete it in about 10 minutes. Just take your time and dont screw up the thermal pads and you wont have any hic-ups.

And Much love to AS5, but i find the ceremique to be better. You will get about 1deg less cooling effect, but its alot more forgiving if you accidently get it somewhere its not supposed to be due to the nonconductivity of its formula.

    In any case have fun

What about the ram that came with this rig? Is there a better type of ram out there to squeeze out the most for performance? I am thinking about going with the T9300 more for the price difference. Although i would like to get my hands on a X7800 i don't think i can convince the wife for the added price. Can the T9300 be overclocked and what program do you use to overclock?

Dont waste your money or effort on Low Latency RAM.
Its a nice bragging right, but I (against others advice) went ahead with the purchase of 4-4-4-12 timmed RAM and i have nothing but a smaller pocket book to show for it.

While i will process the first bite of data faster than all other 68xx/173 computers its not something that will EVER make a difference unless i some how only ever deal with 1bite files

So keep your money and dont worry about that. Plus its almost impossible to even utilize the full speed of 667 RAM anyways so no matter your latency its not going to make a difference.

As to the t9300...yes and no.
Yes it can be overclocked...just not by us. If you get the t9300 (more than enough for what your wanting to do according to your first post) you will be stuck with the 2.5gHz speed. The only CPU's that are overclockable with the gateways are the Extreme CPU's (x7800 and x9000)

I will tell you running an x9000 at 3.0gHz is great, and i enjoy every moment of it, but its still largely wasted and the t9300 will do everything the normal user would ever want to do with a computer. So i wouldnt fret to much over not getting the money for the x9000 over the t9300. Plus the t9300 runs VERY cool when undervolted and will improve your computers temps greatly

Kamin Majere, thanks for the advice. in the next couple of weeks i am going to go ahead and purchase the the t9300. This is the reason why i like forums so much. They help you to learn info and to find out pros/cons and personal experiences from other people. Thanks again to all.

is there a real big difference in performance between the t9300 and the x7800with out overclocking the x7800 or is the x7800 really meant to be overclocked?

So what about the other mobil processors listed like the P9500 or the T9600/9400 as they have a FSB of 1066?

***EDIT I just noticed that the DDR2 in that laptop is only 667 so maybe its because it would be considered a waste of processor? Or could you upgrade both processor and RAM?

What would be a few good processors for the 7811FX model? Could it use the ones I mentioned along with difference extreme processors?

    Thanks

download HW monitor to monitor your temps, wPrime for calcs, and Orthos to stress it.

The FX BIOS will overclock to 3.0gHz though most only get 2.8gHz out of the x7800 (though you might get lucky)

Basically just stress test it from 2.6 and increase a multiplier each time to make sure your stable at each setting.

Unfortunatly we cant get higher than 3.0 in the FX series. And no software can overclock our CPU's higher than the locked multiplier :(
