Okay, I have scourged the internet in an attempt to find some help on updating my BIOS for my P-173x fx. I just got a new processor for it and the motherboard is not recognizing it, so I believe it's a BIOS issue (or not? ) as mine are 2 years old now. I went to Gateway's support site and downloaded the supposed BIOS update (08/2009 I believe), got my USB boot ready, and was about to flash the drivers WHEN.. "These are not the correct bios for your computer" or something to that extent. Imagine that. Gateway.com having information that is misleading/incorrect/nowherenearwhatyouactuallyneeed MAN, what a shocker.
So then I decide to ask the Gateway chat guru's() who then tell me "We're sorry, as our English is limited to copy and pasting out of this handbook and we are too inept to do anything beyond tell you that you're out of warranty - we're gonna have to forward you to (paid service here)." Well, as I've heard that their paid service isn't much better than their free service, I decided to skip out on that..
I then went to Phoenix's website only to find that every single link you click forwards you to some driver genius website that wants you to download their product to tell you what drivers are out of date..
Sigh.
So, has anyone found any BIOS updates for the P-173X fx? Also, I haven't found really ANYthing on that particular model of laptop, it all seems to be heavily focused around the 7811.. are these models similar? I know the 78 has the 9800 and the 173 has the 8800, but other than that do you think I could use something from the 7811?
BTW, my Bios version is 94.29.00.. Don't know if that helps or not.
Also, the disassembly guide stickied in this forum was AWESOME. I was having some overheating problems and needed to clean out the fans and put some new thermal paste on the GPU, and I haven't had any problems since. THANK you!
Thanks in advance, guys and gals.. I'll be standing by.

Okay, so now that I feel nice and retarded...
I just realized that the processor I bought had a 1066 mhz FSB, which, I don't think my laptop mobo supports. Am I right?
Meaning I now I have a 300$ processor with no use as I can't return it to Newegg for a refund. -

Yeah you got screwed with your CPU purchase. You cant run any of the montevina chips.
The CPU's you are looking for are the t8300/t9300/t9500/x7800/x7900/x9000
As to the BIOS, there is a .31 BIOS, but you dont need to update to it unless you just want to (it wont allow you to use the CPU you bought) -

Yeah, well I'm gonna see if newegg will cooperate with me and let me maybe return it with a restocking fee and let me pick up a netbook for a friend of mine. If not... It's off to Craigslist and Ebay with it.
Also, thanks for telling me which I do need to look for Kamin, I don't think I saw any on Newegg so I guess I'll have to find a place that still sells my processor.
Or get a 7811 Mobo... doesn't seem much different than mine, other than the fact that mine can't take a 1066 FSB >_< Has anyone tried to do that?
EDIT: After checking up on those processors you listed for me, and wanting to try and keep my price as close to 300$ as possible.. would I want to go for the t9500 or the x7900? And will I notice a difference between my current processor (t7500 is what it came with) and one of these worth spending another 300 on? I don't mind paying again, just want to let more experienced laptop guys and gals give me their opinions first. -
Neweggg let me return my processor... for a full refund and no restocking fee. Guess they're feeling generous this holiday season.
So the X7900 is the 'extreme' (2.8ghz) and will be able to be overclocked but only has a 4 mb cache. While the t9500 is not an extreme, runs at 2.6ghz but has a 6mb cache. With both being in my price range which would you guys pick?
Thanks for your help. -
I'm looking at the t9500 and the x9000 for my 6860. I got some extra cash from relatives for christmas. There is some good deals on eBay if you don't mind ordering from asia.
-
Yeah I was looking at Ebay as well, looks like the best option for the price. You decide on which one you're gonna get? I was leaning more towards the t9500...

I'm leaning towards the x9000, I'm going to order it tomorrow.

Tell me how it goes ;D
