hey guys - im kinda new on NBR forums... but have been screwing with pcs for quite a while... a while back i came over to the laptop side - couldnt be happier

----------------------------------you can skip the following bit

anyways - about a year ago i got the P-6831 FX, since i wanted a gaming laptop, and only cared about the graphics card saying to myself 'ill upgrade it right away and put some speed into the CPU'... welllll... tbh i havn't really needed to, since its been running smooth as a chevy everything ive thrown at it.... but, now empire:total war is coming out, and i think its that time... t5450... just isn't going to cut it

    ----------------------------------

SO - can someone be kind enough to help me make a list of the possible options for cpu upgrade for the 6831?

theres are a couple of threads, but they are from back in 08 and i want a complete list - since im not exactly in the market for the top shelf... somewhere from medium to top :)

P.S: im also interested in upgrading HDDs to get 1tb RAID on it, since ive seen some 500gb drives are out alrdy... but i dont know which ones are good etc... so if anyone has some info - shout :)

    thanks for reading ^^

    t8300
    t9300
    x7800
    x9000

Thats the only 4 you really need to look at. The rest athat are compatible either wont be an actual upgrade or or too expensive to actually give you benefit over the closest of these 4.

The t8300 is the cheapest but running at 2.4gHz will give you alot of bang for your buck.

The t9300 is what most people consider the optimal price vs preformance CPU. It gives you the full cache, a 2.5gHz speed and ice cold temps

The x7800 is overclockable but some have problems with temps if they go over 2.8gHz. You are also limited on the cache that the CPU comes with. But it can be clocked very fast and costs about the same as a t9300

The x9000... king of the hill. All the speed, all the cache, and stable at 3gHz with out a question. The chip uses alot of power but if you undervolt you will get wonderful results.

I personally have the x9000, but dont necessarily recommend it. It IS a wonderful chip and you will never regret its purchase. But for most 99% of users the t8300 or the t9300 is a better buy. You get plenty of speed and nice cooler temps (and better battery life)

    As to hard drives.

The seagate 500gb 7200 RPM drive is out (and looks nice) but the WD 7200rpm drive should be out soon.

    thx alot kamin!

i read your post about the top 4 in a similar thread - its nice to have that cleared up hehe... i think ill probably shoot for a t9300... if i can score one for a decent price...
btw - what is the best place to get components in europe... ebay is an obvious choice lol, but ES versions used be 50% of the price of normal procs back in the day... now... now their about the same as most people just dont know what an ES is (not that its anything bad... but its basically a used and potentially unstable product and shouldn't even be in circulation :p - hence we should get it dirt cheap ^^)
so any good site in europe anyone?

also - about the HDD's... im definately in the market for a 5400... ive had a 7200 before, i honestly dont see enough of a performance difference - and although i like a pimped laptop as much as anyone... im really not a speed freak - if i dont see a difference, im not about to pay for it hehe ^^

so what sorta prices are we talkin for a pair of 500gb 5400rpm drives... also... if i can slot in under 200dollars thatd be awesome, but i can shoot around those figures ^^
hell, i can even start by getting one now, then when i get some cash lieing around ill up another :p

thx again fr the help ^^

P.S: this is gonna sound stupid, and i could probably research this myself, but this being the best source, i trust info more on here - whats the best method to transfer old data to a new HDD?... this sounds dead simple to me, but im pretty sure there is specific software for that (norton ghost i believe...as well as others) can anyone run me through the basics? :)

No worries mate thats why we're here.

As to the best place to get a CPU in the EU... honestly i'm not sure. I bought my x9000 off a guy in OZ through eBay.

Hopefully another poster from your side of the pond will be able to help you on that.

As to ES vs Retail. If you can get them for the same price (or near enough to it) then yeah go for retail. But theres nothing wrong with ES chips and generally they can be found for alot better deals. But as always with electronics your miles may vary.

As to Hard drives. I believe there are 4 500gb drives available. Really it comes down to personal choice there, but they all float around 100usd from what i've seen. I'm a western digital fan though so i tend to stay brand loyal. Though its all personal experience
