    Hey guys,
I was browsing around at Best Buy in MD, and I found the a New P-6831 FX for only $809, so I decided to buy it. This is a great notebook for the price. I want to let you guys know, so maybe you can pick one up for cheap too.
The store did not have the laptop on display, but they had it in stock in the back, I guess the manager never display the model, so no one ever asked for it until me. It is a good idea to ask the sales associate to check to store and surrounding stores for the lowest price on the laptop if the laptop is out of stock at the store.
Now I just need some time to format and reinstall Vista. This is the best bang for the buck for a gaming laptop, but I still prefer my current laptop because it has a higher resolution for surfing the internet.

i believe thats the old P-FX model that Best Buy is trying to clear out. The newer one with a faster processor speed should be available now, at its original $1399 price.

My computer came with the old 1.67 T5450 processor rather than the faster processor 1.83 T5550?, but for the price I am not complaining. I will upgrade in the future, the monitor, LCD, & processor. I do not play games much, so this was a good find for the price.
I am sure the price for the P-6831 FX will be negotiable, since the newer model P-6860 FX is currently on sale for $1249.00. The price on the P-6831 FX varies from store to store, so ask the sales associate to check in the computer for you. At one store in Maryland, they had 2 in store but they were selling it for $1249.00 even though the P-6860 is in stock, but I am sure they will negotiate if you tell me the P-6831 FX is the old model, and the newer model is the P-6860 FX.
Does anyone know if my Compaq x6000 17 LCD 1650x1050 will it fit the Gateway laptop? How can you tell?

hmmm... are you sure it's the P-6831 FX? at $809, it is insanely cheaper than the P-6860, and the only differences are CPU and the RAM.

if Best Buy here in Westminster CA has that offer, then I'll grab one now. lol :D

    Also the harddrive.

But mainly, it's because from Bestbuy's point of view, when new versions come out, it's not surprising that they want to get rid of the old version as soon as possible, lest it becomes obsolete.

They probably don't know it's only minor revision.

You'd have a better chance at getting the price if you make them price match BBY MD and they actually find it for $809.

yeah right...lol...i tried to get the last one there, but they sold it already. had to go to tustin. and then that one had a problem.. it kept shutting off while running on battery power.(price 1199.99) so i got the 6860 which has vista 64, which ill be getting rid of after i finish testing it out for benchmarking purposes. 64 is causing problems with something simple like ntune, so it has got to go.

well, my 3dmarkscores are pretty much the same. 10600+ with 64/32 bit so ill just keep running 32 bit. and 64 bit wasnt compatible with part of my programs. it ran smooth for having nothing on it, but i still scored the same with 64 bit bloat ware and 32 bit nothing installed except drivers.

just use your 32/64 bit disk gateway gave you...it is pre-activated for select gateway models. at least for the 6831/6860 i never had a 171 so i couldn't be for sure there.

I wonder if the 32/64 bit Gateway disk has a option to pick either 32 or 64 bit?

it is definitely worth a shot. im thinking it will work. reason being it's an oem disc for gateway model computers. slap in a hard drive and give it a test. they are prtty much the same computers, with different options, correct?

I think your right, I will try it out in a few days maybe, I am thinking there may not be too much of a difference between 32bit and 64bit.

if you run multi threaded photo, music or video software. then 64 bit is the way to go. but a laptop is maxed at 4 gigs. and some laptops read 3.2 gigs while others read 3.0 gigs (mine) (32 bit op's)
    (very high end laptops excluded)

can I just tell the best buy here that best buy - maryland has just given their p-6831 a $809 price tag? will that work?

why are best buys having different prices anyway?

i dont think that is going to work...but anything is worth a try. if they went for that then people would be talking about sales/no sales tax and host of other niffty little tricks to get out of paying full price. he got the buy of the century for 809 bucks. the best you will probably get is 1199.00 and if it's that price and open box .... then 1050.99 is about the lowest you will find. but this is speculation

I've just called Best Buy Long Beach and Costa Mesa... both do not have the P-6831 series. Long Beach said they can order it for me, but still tagged at $1,249.

so I guess I'll just get the P-6860 which comes with the free game. btw, BB Westminster told me that the $100 off will be gone by Sunday, returning the unit to its $1,349 regular price.

Yes, I am sure. The price for the P=6831 FX laptop varies depending on the store location in Maryland. Some store was selling the laptop higher than sale price of $1249.00 on the Best Buy website. The only way to get the current price is to ask the employee to check the current price & stock in the computer and surrounding store to get the best deal.

Saturday a guy tried to sell me the P6831 FX for 1349.99, They had none in the store and it was to be ordered. Saturday I went in to look at another Best Buy and they had 6 of the P6860 FX sitting on a shelf and none open.
Sunday morning I logged into the web to see the price was 1249.99 -- I went for it. I'm glad I did. I think you will find the price will not come down on this again for awhile. It's a great deal at either price. So far everything has been stellar.
