I have been punding the forums reading up on the FX series, I placed an order online from Gateway for the P-171sfx, I got the rep down to $1300, and at that price point I was very happy with the unit, figuring I can upgrade the CPU down the road, and get the most use out of the t7250 as I can for a while..
My question is on the display, the only thing I am concerned about is the resolution..is the 1440x900 on the unit decent, in terms of screen coverage and pixelation and such? I have not been able to see this unit person and I do not really care about being 1900x1200 unless inhernently the 17" screen would really 'suffer' from the 1440x900? Conversely, in terms of long gevity and playing games at the LCD's native resolution, the lower res would probably fair better over time no, rather than having to bump down the resolution to a lower interpolated res for future games?
Anyone who has the 6831 comment on the screen quality?

I was skeptical at first about the resolution, but it is great for gaming, will last alot longer than a WUXGA display. Its very sharp and I cannot see the pixels...I am a very picky person so I think this is a great display.

Thats great, I feel a lot better, it was the ony part of the next model up I was really 'debating' about...
I read a review online that said the screen a nice hybrid between glossy and matte....whats your opinion? -

I ordered it on 2/7 and it has and still says 3/11

EDIT!: to answer how it will last longer...
the higer the resolution, the harder it is for the GPU to render things, so a lower native res is better for gaming, but not quite as sharp for obvious reasons.
so....1440x900 wil last longer than 1920x1200 in the sense that you will be able to play on native res for much longer without problems, while if you had the 1920x1200 screen you would have to down scale which will reduce image quality. -
I think I was asking about, and he was agreeing to, that the lower res of your display, the longer the GPU will be able to play future games well, the lower the res, the less work the GPU and CPU have to do, so theortically, if you have the 1900x1200, you will struggle sooner with framerates at that res in the future, unless you lower the res in games, and as we all know it looks horrible on LCD screens when they are out of their native resolution..

I love you guys. I seem to have made my choice for which laptop I am going to buy.

yes we are quite helpful arent we -
These guys are 100% right and you don't see the pixelation on the screen either... I use to be an anti-glossy screen type of guy, since all my other panels for my monitor's have been matte. I am no longer anti-glossy for this screen is really beautiful, specially at the right angle.
I'm so glad to be part of this club. -
This is a decision I am struggling with as well. I guess to me 1440 x 900 seems like a bit low resolution to me. If it were at 1680 x 1050 this would be a not brainer but 1440 x 900 on a 17 incher seems really low.
I guess I am too much of an eye candy whore. -
Well, I just checked this out at BestBuy tonight and I have to say, I am impressed. It was a beautiful laptop, and the screen seemed the fit well even if it is said to be low resolution. Playing around with it, it seemed fine and much better than my current laptop screen. If you still aren't sure about it, just take a trip to your local BestBuy, just after checking if your local BestBuy has this one instock.

I'd say go for the 6831 1199 deal and upgrade the cpu on your own later. The 171S-fx does come with a 2.0 core2duo, but...it's still 2mb of cache. May as well put that $100 aside and invest in the t7500 instead or maybe the new t9300.

The gateway model at Best Buy looked nice and I didn't have any problems with the screen, but I wish that they would've installed a game so that I could see how it looks.
