I have the P-6831FX Gateway with the original hard drive WD2500BEVS ... Would I be better off buying a new (faster) hard drive OR an additional identical hard drive which came in it originally (in RAID 0)? The cost is about the same, but which direction will be FASTER? Either way I'm going to end up with more disk space (not that I need it - my original 250GB is only ΒΌ filled).

get an ssd if you don't need tons of space. i'm waiting to see how these gskill titans (128gb 299$) actually perform, the ocz vertx series should be interesting too.

I have both setups you are asking about, I would just get a second HD, and set up raid 0, 128 stripe size. You will get faster performance and not spend that much.

I personally would not buy a SSD for the price that they are right now. Perhaps in a year or two, though. I'd say in your situation using a second hard drive for raid would be faster than buying a 7200.

The benefits of RAID in real life situations are minimal at best. The near instant access time of an SSD will improve your day to day running of your laptop like you would not believe. You can pickup a 64GB or 128GB for not too much money now. My OCZ Core is the best upgrade I have ever made.

OCZ Cores have the stutter issue. You have to use Windows ReadyState to get around it. Which may or may not matter to the user.

I don't use Steady State and it runs absolutely perfectly. Not one stutter in a month of intensive 24/7 use on both Vista and Windows 7. All you need to do is set it up as a non-member disk of the on-board RAID array.
