I was just curious I read somewhere that the 8800 GTS was actually soldered into the board, I don't really believe it but am just curious, because If I pick it up I'd like to get an 8800 GTX or better when/if they come down in price (WAY later on of course)

yes the 8800M GTS in 6831FX is soldered on motherboard.
-
well as unfortunate as that is, It's still a great buy and that card should last for a very long time still well worth it IMO
-
Indeed - for what its worth, it is a really powerful card, one that won't need upgrading for a good 2 years; by that time, you may be ready for a new laptop anyway.

is the card in the new Gateway® P-171XL FX Edition or the Gateway® P-171X FX Edition laptops that are coming out?
-
I would imagine so since they are based on the same chipset, so I'd wager yes anything in the FX line is going to be an Soldered 8800 GTS

, though i found out they dont deliver to UK anyway

It is soldered? Well that's cheaper than sockets over a million units but this is going to mean a MB swap if GPU dies. Odd that Gateway spent the money on a CPU socket.
Does anyone know the OEM? Arima? -
The Motherboard is Foxconn I believe. I seem to remember seeing that logo when upgrading my CPU.
-
The higher end gateway fx models use the PM965 chipset while the 6831 uses the GM965 chipset so they may be upgradeable.

Both Intel's Chipset ID utility and CPU-Z identify my motherboard as a GM965.

So what do you guys think the odds are of the S-FX and above models having an MXM style Video Card as opposed to it being soldered on the board? The whole GTS soldered on the board is starting to push me away a little bit. I mean if you didn't get a warranty and the motherboard went out, you're pretty much done as far as price goes.
Also since the GM965 board supposedly (officially) doesn't support the T8xxx style processors (penryn correct?) perhaps the S-FX and above boards use the PM board? IDK i'm just really hoping for a slot type GPU rather than Solder, something just doesn't settle right for some reason with that for me. -
OK - I know people have taken the heatsinks off - can somebody take a look again and settle it once and for all?
-
It's definatly soldered, been hearing that from multiple people
-
I was talking about the chipsets. I mean, i see no reason for this laptop to have a GM chipset, but some people are really insistent on it, so....

I believe the P-6831 is GM...but I also believe the P-171X and XL are P....
-
Look guys, this is silly. There is absolutely NO reason for a GM chipset to be in this laptop. Not to mention, all of these beliefs fly int he face of Gateway's own specs (which clearly say PM). -
Went back to best buy to show my friend the laptop. went into the device manager and the device was a GM AND a PM (can't remember exactly those of you that have it look in the device manager)

I ran the the Intel Chipset ID program. It said my 6831 had a GM.
-
I have both models, where do I download the Intel program to see, and I will let everyone know what I find out.
