What is the best CPU I can upgrade to with my P-6831FX Gateway?
I'm specifically missing the Vanderpool Technology extensions since I'm now playing around with virtual machines.
Thanks.

the x7900 runs quite a bit hotter tho.
i have a t8300 and it runs very very well, allows me to play all games and it was just shy of 90 quid.
the t8300 is a 2.4ghz with a 3mb cache -
I highly recommend a T9300... its probably still the best bang for your buck.... I have it and it increased the performance of my 6860 tremendously
-
I'm interested to purchase this one: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=33917&processor=T9300&spec-codes=SLAPV,SLAQG,SLAYY,SLAZB The T9300...but I don't see it on newegg or tigerdirect. Where can I find this to purchase online?
-
There's a few on Ebay... you can also search in Google Products
-
Does it matter whether I get the OEM or the Retail package?
Also, I have another question about upgrading the memory. What are the options with this model? It comes with 3GB. Is there only one slot for memory? Can I take out the 3GB and put in a 4GB module? -
It should not matter, get an OEM because they are usually cheaper... all that matters is the actual cpu itself.... also I believe you can get a max of 4gb mem, but you have to remove the single stick of 1gig mem and replace it with another 2gig stick thus increasing the total amount to 4gigs

x7900 is the best bet. Made for gaming. OC!

I like my x7800. I got it for 199, I think? No, I got it for cheaper. 149.99.
I don't remember. I know it was less than 200. I like it.
I don't think that helps. Post what you find and we'll give you a reply.
Anything T8xxx t9xxx or x7xxx will be a large improvement over stock. -

Hey, I haven't upgraded yet but I am wondering if the T9600 would be compatible. I can't seem to find the T9300 or T9500 anywhere. Thanks.
Here is a link to the T9600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111006 -
NO the t9600 will not work. Look on ebay for a t9300.
the cpu's you can choose from is: t8300, t9300, t9500, x7800, x7900, and x9000. -
Would this one work?

Thanks. -
Yes that will work.

ok guys, so far this is the latest thread I've seen..I need help/advise:
I purchased a x7900 cpu and installed it into my P-6831fx. The bios reads it however, once windows is about to boot, I get a BSOD (blue screen). Heres some of the changes I did but no success:
-upgraded BIOS to 94.31
-changed AHCI to Compatibility
-disabled all enabled in BIOS
-tried 2 different hard drives (one seagate and one Western Digital)
-switched places of RAM (even took the 1 gb out)
-replaced thermal grease
-tried VISTA, XP and still no success
I've seen forums that this CPU works on this laptop, and I know its not faulty because the BIOS reads it perfectly. Could it be that I have to replace the stock ram to 2x2GB? The blue screen's first error code is 0x000000 which refers to memory..Does the CPU actually depend on the kind of RAM you put in?? Any advise will be great..and much appreciated...thanks. -
a couple more things to add:
-some forums said that the video driver could be the problem: is that possible?
-I placed the old CPU back and it works fine..
-should I put everything back to stock, including drivers, and would that possibly work??
once again advise would be great, thanks again
p-6831fx
running windows 7 64bit (on old CPU as of now)
7200 seagate momentus 500GB -
Did you apply thermal paste? The X7xxx cpu's are known to get hot. I would try to put everything back to stock and go from there. Also is it an OEM cpu or ES?
-

Yeah sounds like you CPU is instantly hitting its thermal level and is shutting down the system.
Other than that i could possibly be bad in some minor way and it reads fine in the bios but slaggs out once the OS is active and it needs to actually do something. THe cpu isnt doing much if anything during the BIOS post. -
yes I placed thermal paste..I used arctic alumina.
as for the cpu being oem or es Im not sure. Its ok though, I contacted the seller and Im getting my refund.
But as a general question. is it better to upgrade the cpu and ram (and possibly an ssd drive), or is it better off getting a new pc?
and another quick question: can the p-6831 accept the 2 x 4 gb (8gb) 667mhz pc5300 ram??
Once again, thanks a bunch. -

Its good that you're getting a refund then, hopefully you've now met your quota of bum CPU's for your life time (it is extremely rare, but does happen)
As to upgrade vs new... thats entirely up to you.
Assuming the computer does everything that you want it to, then a few simple upgrades will suit you fine usually. Though unless you are doing something insanely memory intensive i would say that the 8GB RAM upgrade is a waste of money.
I have an M17x but i still use my 6860FX quite a bit, and the only thing thats not stock now is I still have my x9000 CPU in the rig -
I'll hang on to old paint for a while longer.
The question is how long the soldered in 8800 will hang in there?
Unless GW support turns around for the people out of warranty, this is my last Gateway. -
I thought the 68xx fx's were limited to 4gb of ram?
-
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
Nope they can handle 8GB of RAM, but for all but the most memory intensive tasks its a complete waste of money. Normal users cant even really use 4GB all that well so 8 is generally a waste of a few hundred dollars.
If you do alot of editing and visual programs it can help (or if you run 3+ virtual machines). But most users (even gamers) will have a hard time eating up 4gigs of RAM.
But to each their own. I ended up buying low latency ram (despite everyone telling me it was a waste of money) and all it did was cost me 104 dollars and give me squat as far as preformance goes.
Basically if you want a faster machine and dont actually run anything that requires massive amounts of RAM then SSD>8GB RAM -
Yeah, I'm a graphic designer and use photoshop CS4 usually on my p-6831fx when I'm on the go..but I guess 4 will be good enough..had enough problems already with my x7900 cpu..
By the way, so the t9300 will work on the p-6831fx?? How about the t9500??
I'm definitely getting the ram..and saw a ssd intel drive for 200..but upgrading the cpu, will you notice a difference??
thanks -
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
Ah well if you do alot of high detail and demanding CS4 stuff then 8gigs of ram might be a good investment for you.
Yes the t9300 and the t9500 will both work
If you end up getting the t9300/t9500, SSD and 8gigs of RAM the system will seem like a whole new machine performance wise. If i were to recommend just 2 of the upgrades the SSD and CPU will have the largest day to day impact for you though...the RAM will mostly only help with massive graphic designs. -
I ended up getting a new T9300 (with the best stepping SLAYY) for a good price. I have installed it but I am having a problem re-screwing in screw #5 of the thermal pipe. It's the bigger screw to the far right (the only one not black) and it has a spring under it. For some reason, I keep twisting it righty-tighty but it spins and spins forever. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
-
Are you sure it's lined up correctly? That should be the first screw you tighten.
