I have a problem dual-booting with my 6860 and was wondering if I could get some help. I can get into vista but my xp is unrecognized even when i add it through easybcd. Is there a better program to make xp be recognized or am I doing it wrong? I added xp on the F drive since I made a partition and it has that letter assigned to it but it does not give me the option to boot into xp when starting up. Any suggestions very appreciated!

I dont know if this has been addressed yet, but I just finished talking with technical support and the hissing ac adaptor is a defective adaptor. The tech said further use of the adaptor could lead to damage to the laptop.
I am running a p 172x fx. -
AFAIK, easybcd is a gui front end that uses bcdedit which is built into Vista. You can find out how to use bcdedit directly by going to the MS site and searching for it.
-
Hello All, just wanted to add that I bought a 172S FX less than a week ago. and the adapter started faintly hissing the first time it loaded up. Not a very loud hiss but enough to catch you eye if there is a moment of silence in the room.
If people start returning theirs i'll follow the leader just to stay on the safe side. -
your best bet for fixing and setting up dual boot options in vista.

download vistabootpro.
a very good program! -
That is normal, unless it gets really load, or smells don't worry.

Don't lose sleep over it

I've had my P-6831FX notebook for around 3~4 months with no major problems other than typical Vista updates (that for some reason never install correctly the first time) and small hiccups.
Until two days ago that is because now my USB ports are giving me problems. The ports are able to pick up my headset but I can't use keyboards/mouses through them. There isn't anything that says "Device cannot be recognized" or anything like that, whatever I plug in there just doesn't work. For instance I have a little sensor that I plug into the USB port of my notebook to use with my wireless mouse, now when I plug it in at first it lights up showing it has power and is trying to connect to the mouse but before it can pick up the mouse the light just turns off. It's happened for any keyboard/mouse I've tried and even can't pick up my graphics tablet.
The part that bothers me is that it can still pick up the headset and I can use it just fine. I've updated my drivers (to my knowledge anyway) and the problem has persisted. It's left me a little perplexed, don't know if there is a common solution to this but I thought I would come here first to check.
Any help would be appreciated

Mine doesn't click or hiss (even after spilling a cup of coffee on it) but I haven't noticed because having too much fun playing games on it
Theres no way I'm returning mine unless BSOD appears
Its a great laptop for games, a little too heavy but otherwise can't complain about it for $1200 -
oh...so i see....you thought you would get it amped up on coffee like you huh.....
maybe get a few extra fames in out the deal...

Headsets on USB? Are you talking about mic/headset for games. Anyway try this; shut down laptop and plug in device now restart. Anything? USB is weird at times on Vista and you may have a hardware fault like a short in one of your devices. Try one device at a time.
-
Yeah it was a mic/headset for gaming, sorry to confuse. And no luck with restarting the comp while the device is plugged in. So far the headset is the only thing it can pick up, I'm wondering if it's because it's got a speaker/mic plug in to a USB converter that it works...
I don't know, at this rate I might just have to head back to BB
-
Lots of people having problems with Mic's. Try your IDT control panel and check for settings. You should get a pop if option selected. I would turn off the enable power management as well. One poster said to re-install drivers. Search this forum for clues.
If this works your normal mic jack is good.
As for you USB, it may be your driver got jacked? Do you have a control panel for it and do you have any problems under hardware manager. Make sure your USB headset driver, if any, is vista compatable, check web site. I'm guessing here, sorry.
Good luck -
i have a problem with my P172fx-s
i decided to do a reinstall of vista with my included disk only prooblem was im used to disks including all the original drivers (ie restoring it back to factory condition) cept i lost all my drivers, i managed to reinstall most and its back to being seminormal except for the fact that i cant access the internet, the drivers wont install and i cant do anything, everytime i turn on network discovery mode it just turns it off as soon as i hit confirm. so any help is greatly apriciated -
look for drivers with your desktop and send it to your laptop by the USB drive or something like that
-
i did that its how i got the rest but the 2 specific drivers for my wireless lan wont install for some reason, theres no setup for them you have to follow some command prombt thing but it doesnt work
-
i'm not sure what you mean by that, but have you tried to go to device manager and update the drivers there?
-
it doesnt come up in the device manager.
Installation
After you have downloaded and double-clicked the file D20181-003-001, files self-extract and copy into the C:\Cabs\D20181-003-001 folder on the hard drive.
1. From the Start menu, type C:\Cabs\D20254-001-001\Preinstall.cmd into the Start Search Field and press ENTER.
2. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Allow/Continue.
3. Follow all onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
thats the instructions, the file shows up when i put it into the search field but when i click it it comes up with an error saying that there is no such file, yet i can find it on my hdd -
look for an exe file...something like setup.exe...do you see this file in there?
-
there is no setup file all the other ones had one, theres two both from realtek that dont have anything, i posted the instructions in the readme file above

Hi Guys. IN my P6860FX LED bars from the volume idicator status doesnt ligt up when im rising volume and hotkeys from multimedia panel doesnt responding, only one works - WINDOWS HOTSTART. Hotkeys from multimedia panel are light up but volume bars not. Any clue??
-
didn't know they even lit up, since they looked to be painted on... i could be wrong.
-
my indicators dont light up, but the (-) and (+) light up. i chatted with tech. sprt. and they said they are not supposed to light up. that would have been nice though if they did.
-
Hi all...my first post here. I have been trying to solve a major prob with my 2 month old P6831FX. I keep getting: "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered".... There seems to be a lot of chatter about it but no REAL solution. Any ideas or suggestions?
-
Are you overclocking the GPU?
-
I had that issue with another model and there was no solution to the issue other than a clean os install. Also once you get the system up and running again, I would highly sugest you to clean the older drivers when you install anew one.
-
just set everything back to quality mode instead of high performance. and it should take care of the error for the most part. the driver cant keep up so it tries to reset itself. (speculation of course)
-
Not overclocking the GPU...just got it back from Gateway repair depot (what a joke) where all they did was a OS install. I have not cleaned all the old drivers off though. I just downloaded DriverSweeper and I guess I will try that. Alitunay...did the other system you speak of run fine after cleaning the drivers?
Thanks for the speedy reply all!! -
I tried this and no good...
-
did you update your gpu drivers ?
-
yes...I updated to Gateway specs. I thought about trying this:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=265740
Any thoughts? -
then try driver 175.63. i never had a problem with that driver and my 3dmark06 top scores still stand with that driver. if you system still crashes with this driver...then either take it back or send it in for repair.
-
that's a good place to start.... yes, try this first.
-
Tried 177.98 and no change. This is such a crazy problem. Many have listed the same issues with many different fixes that work for some but most with this error never find a solution. I just cannot imagine how so many have it at the same time others run fine. I have noticed the sure test is to run the "Rate this computer" and that has always resulted in the orange lightning looking flashes followed by the "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered". I guess it must be a bad card or motherboard. I have almost ruled out software but others are sure it is a Vista problem. That doesnt explain how some have no problems at all with the same setup....
-
you have any other issues ? problems in games...
-
only time i had this problem was when i would super over clocked the gpu, but running the gpu at normal settings and it never gave this error....
and using gpuz... it states that your gpu driver files change each time you install a new driver?
did you try the 175.63 driver?
nvlddmkm: each copy of this file has a different version number as well. you can change this file to see anything changes or make sure that the file itself is changing when updating to new drivers. (gpuz) -
havent even played one game...it does it when I tried to play a DVD. Sometimes it will go for hours without the error... most of the time i have spent on it has been with gateway tech chat or in forums looking for solutions...
-
that sounds bad, where did you get it from ?
-
and using gpuz... it states that your gpu driver files change each time you install a new driver?
I have not tried 175.63...I will try that tonight. You might be onto somehting with the nvlddmkm file version not changing...
I got this from Buy.com and it is still under warranty...I really dont want my money back as much as I want the rig to work! I dont think I can get this one anywhere now...especially for $599...Thanks for the help! Stay tuned! -
yep for that price its probably the best bang for the buck in the universe, if it works that is.
-
Long shot..you may have a defective power supply which drops in and out. Try running your power plan on "power saver", to surf not game, to see if you still reset. Do this with battery out as well. Any other 6831's near you to swap supplies? Asking Gateway this may have an effect?
-
No change. The DriverSweeper does the job on cleaning out the old nvlddmkm file.
Checked the "power saver" plan also did not help.
Looks like Gateway may have an available 6831fx soon after they receive this one back!!
Thanks again for all the help!!! -
Hey, I have a working RIG. Finally Gateway replaced the entire system board and it has worked wonderfully. Thanks for all of your help tracking this issue down!!
-
ohhh very nice! congrats mans , you will be very impressed with this "working" machine.

I had GPU overheating issues with my P-6831FX which caused my system to shut down.
I updated video drivers to 179.48 nVidia drivers DLed from laptopvideo2go and put all video settings on my game to low and turned on vertical sync to limit frames to 30/60 FPS. GPU stays around 60 C rather than 80-100C. Less work, less heat... noticed it would heat up cranking 120+ FPS on the menus and that would be more likely to overheat than playing in game with modest settings. Cranking up the settings also overheated it. The solution seems fairly obvious, but sharing this to others in case the get the same issue.
The exhaust in the back right doesn't have a "blowing" feeling anymore, so I fear the fan isn't working. The CPU side blows fine. I still feel heat seeping out the back right port though.
