I just replaced the T5450 on my laptop with a T8100. However, I'm now having overheating problems with the new CPU. It sometimes gets up to 92*C when I run a CPU stress test like Orthos.

I think my problem is that the heatsink isn't directly touching the chip because if I put pressure in that area, I can get a 10*C drop.

I am using Thermalright The Chill Factor paste and it is thinner than the original paste put on the heatsink. I have globbed it up some more to get to run without a thermal shutdown but I do not like this fix.

What can I do about this problem?

If you have the old HS, with the long legs, you can bend them slightly upwards to increase the preasure of the HS. The other option is to look for the revision a002 of the quad core HS used in the P7901 and P7808. This HS will keep the cpu cool while the short legs keep the HS pressed against the die.

I have the A02 version of the heatsink already.

I just reseated it again after bending the tabs. I followed the correct screw tightening order too. I finally put a piece of foam double sided tape over the original foam to help put pressure on the CPU.

I am now hovering in the high 70's with Orthos running. An improvement, but my T5450 was cooler! What gives?

I think my next step is to get some of that fancy IC Diamond paste I've seen people use and a new NB thermal pad. I hate being out of the computer loop... just want to keep my trusty Windows laptop running before I fully switch over to my MacBook Air.

2.1 GHz is alot faster than 1.66 so the cpu will run hotter. Nature of the beast......

But didn't I step down in wattage?

My T8100 should be 35W and the T5450 45W so it should run as cool or cooler?

no, those are top TDP and even then that is what they will use only is clocked out to the max. Since you are not overclocking either you will never get to those TDPs. In theory if you declock the T8100 to 1.66 GHz and vcore was down to the minimum then yes the T8100 would probably run cooler.

On the same note running the T5450 at 2.1 GHZ with a proper vcore to support it will probably run hotter than the T8100. Again this is all the nature of the beast. Now running in the 70C+ range for prime95 or orthos is well within acceptable ranges. Under normal use you will be fine...........
