Regarding this laptop I noticed that it comes with a 9 cell battery that sticks out of the back roughly 3/4-1 inch. I'm not really sure, but is a 6 cell battery smaller and if so how much/if at all does the 6 cell stick out of the back?

We won't know until someone buys a 6-cell and pops it in, since Gateway sells the entire P-171 with the 9-cell.

My guess? It will be flush with the back of the computer.

The gateway P-171 FX notebooks all comes with 9-cell battery that is flush with the notebook chassis. Unfortunely, in the accessories section these battery as a separate sale item is currently "out of stock", so they wouldn't be available to the P-16831fx owner yet.
