Can anyone tell me exactly how big the gap is between the heatsink and the northbridge in my Gateway? Or at least the size of the pad/shim they successfully used, at any rate. I need a replacement thermal pad, but doofus that I am, I don't still have the pad that I ruined.![]()
Basically, I need to know if this

will work. Thanks!

Were you actually thinking of ordering that for 10 dollars plus shipping?
I would recommend going to your local hardware store and buying some brass shim stock and cut/trim to fit. You can use PLASTIGUAGE or just CLAY-PLAY-DOH to give yourself an idea of what size you need. May be more than you want to do though. It will certainly give you better heat transfer than a piece of rubber.
Don't forget to use thermal paste on both sides.

Er... that's not rubber. It's uncut thermal gap padding. For use with aftermarket video card water blocks. It's plenty thermally conductive for the northbridge, but I don't know if it's the right size.
I thought about doing the same copper mod that I've read about here, but that sounds like an awful lot of work to cool a motherboard chipset... and I still can't find any solid info about the dimensions of the shim.
Hence my question! Anyone know?
