Hi there,
Yesterday I was a proud owner of a P-6860 FX of about 5 months. Today, I'm pretty much lugging around a brick it seems.
I went to reboot yesterday, and everything was fine. Windows 7 closed out everything and shut down like normal but when the computer went to boot back up nothing happened. The power lights were on on the Multimedia Panel and the LED at the front of the machine showed that I had it plugged in. There was nothing on the display and I could tell that the display wasn't even on. It didn't have any of the normal running sounds it usually does when it boots up such as fans spinning and hard drive etc...
I tried running it off of the power adapter by itself with no battery in it. I tried taking the battery out and unplugging it to cool for about 30 mins. I've also checked to make sure the ram, cpu, and hard drives are seated correctly.
My power adapter is giving about 19.5 V of power so that's good.
I've also tried doing an emergency boot with the Function+Esc+Power buttons. I plugged in a USB floppy drive with the bios on it to see if I could reinstall the bios.
I've done just about everything I can think of besides resetting the bios. I can't seem to find where I can just reset the bios straight from the motherboard like you do with desktop computers. Usually there's a battery that you take out... hold the power button down a few seconds.. and then put the battery back in.
Does anybody know how to reset the bios from the motherboard on this thing?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks much,
Chris

have you tried plugging in an external monitor?

However, I did notice that if the FN+F1 button to turn the LED Lights on and off works. -
The main thing I need to figure out at this point is how to reset the cmos from the motherboard. Not sure where to look for it.

What gpu is it, if its a 8400 or 8600 sorry to say but this sounds like a possible failed GPU, same symptoms in my old lg r500.

Okay, here's the deal guys! I got the Laptop to come back up.
All I did was reset the CMOS by taking the Motherboard battery out, holding down the power button for a few seconds (I did 10 just to be sure) and put it back in.
IN the image above I've highlighted the CMOS battery. It's hiding just under the wireless card. In this image you can just barely see it peeking out.
Many thanks to SPINITCH over at Notebookforums.com for the this image... I just added in the text to show where the battery is.
So far so good... it's still running. But something wierd must have happened to make the laptop lock like that and require me to reset CMOS. I'm thinking it might have been some kind of overheating.
My CPU temp is around 45-50 c. I haven't had a chance to check the GPU yet, will post when I can.
I hope this helps some people. -

I is thinking your CMOS battery is just dying out early or something? its a hunch. I was getting BSODS everyday on my desktop till i replaced the CMOS 3V battery, then it was smooth as a boat and the desktop was only 6 months old. anywho, let us know your testing results.

Well I was able to do a little stress testing on my GPU & CPU last night. I didn't find a single problem really. The CPU ran steady between 40-55 C and the GPU went between 50-70 C.
Although, I am curious about the fans... several times during gaming last night I lifted up the laptop to see what fans I could see running. If you're looking at the laptop screen, the fan that is at the back right never came on I didn't really notice the fan on the far back left ever coming on either. But there was definately some fan going because there was air being vented out the copper heat sink on the left side.
I'm going to keep watching these... maybe these fans have just gone out. -
good to see you bringing it back to life. certainly stress CPU/GPU and monitor temps to see if all fans kick in. FPS_Sean raises good point about possibility of dying CMOS batt. did u undervolt your CPU? if yes may want to raise it bit and check again. again glad you revived it

Well, after another day of using the laptop I haven't had any problems. My primary OS is a beta version of Windows 7. I'm not sure what build it is but it's within the last month. I'm wondering if some weird quirk in the OS might have caused a Panic in the system and made it to do some kind of emergency shut down.
I've had a little friend here at work playing Flatout 2 on it practically all day w/o much break!

Hello there, so today I experienced the same exact problems as the opening poster with the P-6860 with the same conditions(Powers up, lights on, but no Display). I have tried every single thing the opening poster has along with his solution to the problem. I really don't know what else to try, and I have no warranty. Are there any more possible solutions or am I just going to have to settle that it really is a failed motherboard. If the motherboard is dead, what are my options? Thank you.

Same thing happened to my friends desktop PC... I did some diagnostics and determined it was one stick of his memory.... so we left one in and are sending the second one in because it is under warranty..... try checking out the ram.... and thank you for using the search function your first post here instead of posting a brand new repetitive post

Thanks but I tried doing that as well. The laptop does not even post up nor make any sounds but it does turn on. Any more possible solutions would be helpful, thank you.
