I know there have been multiple threads about this, but I just wanted to clear it up. I am going to be buying a laptop cooler in the next few days here and I have narrowed it down to two choices really. It is between the NC2000 and the NZXT Cryo. Both have very good reviews at Newegg, except something about the Cryo needing the fans flipped over so they blow into the laptop, but I digress.

I would like an opinion from someone who has either used one of, or both of these notebook coolers. I would like to know which is better for actually setting on your lap. I use my desk at home and usually don't have any heat problems, but I do notice when I put it on my lap at friends' houses that the keyboard even gets uncomfortably hot from time to time. I know both of these coolers are going to work, but I want to know which will work better sitting on my lap. All the NZXT models seem to pull air from directly underneath the cooler which means if it were on my lap, my knees may block two of the three fans on some models. But, some models also have 3 120mm fans which even if one is blocked, that's still one good size fan pumping cooler air where the Zalman seems to have smaller fans.

To /endrant here I would just like an opinion on which is better suited for actually cooling on your lap.

the zalman is cool, and the nc-1000 fits my bag, so it stays mobile.
    its not light though.

    I prefer this one
    cooler.jpg

But its a home made thing. But it cools the FX chassis perfectly. I've been sketching out a way to make it lighter and a bit more professional looking.

As to the ones you want... but are very good coolers, but look over XPS's review thread and make the best decision for you.

i dont use the NZXT Cryo on my lap, but it is a very good cooler for the 6860. my idle temps are low to mid 20's C for the cpu and 41C for the gpu.

what i do instead of using the laptop usb ports to power the cryo, is run the 2 usb cables into a usb hub connected to a 5v AC to USB wall charger.

i can post pics if needed for clarification.

    Yo!
(haven't heard that one in a while)

Its actually a serving tray, my wife was slightly less angry at my destroying a serving tray over one of her cutting boards :p

It weighs a ton though so eventually i'm going to redesign it to be a sandwich style cooler and made of wither 1/4in oak boards or plexiglass

    One more opinion.

    I have a 7811. I use the lapinator plus. It's a passive cooler.
    lapinator.com

I constantly compute/game with my laptop on my lap. This thing works great.
No fan, no noise. I've played Crysis, COD4, FarCry2 for up to 4 hours at a time, no issues. I checked the max temps for the 9800GTS and it was 52 degrees (C). Fits easily into a bag, very light.

Again, just my opinion, but I (and now a few of my friends) love these things.

I currently use the Targus X-Stand which is just a stand that elevates the back of the laptop.

Its good considering it does not require any sort of power to run any fans or whatnot. Although it does not cool it as much as the NZXT Cryo does, it gives it good airflow at the bottom which overall means a happier laptop :)

For passive cooling, try this for 16.00 from your local Walmart. It's in the Office section around all of the mesh desk organizer stuff:

http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=371432 (the Walmart one does not come with the little hub).

I don't even use an active cooler on my 6860 with this, and the active cooler for my 7811 sits in between the mesh plates and blows air right to both of the vents and on the hard drives. It's the shiznit.

I did break off the oversized backs on both (just wiggled them for awhile) so the bottom plate sits flat - it's got plenty of height via the top plate's adjustable stand anyways. A minute or two of work with a small file to smooth the broken welds and 4 little furniture feet to stick on the bottoms, and they're perfect now.
Flattened down like this, it folds flat and slides into my travel case's front pocket for trips too - bonus.

Go for the NZXT Cryo LX Cooler.

It is built for 17inch gaming laptops. So it perfect for ya.

    GOOD luck

and it cools the 6860 VERY well. my idle temps are low to mid 20s for the cpu, 41C for the gpu. under load the cpu has only reached 50C one time, and the max i've seen is 68C for the gpu

I have been leaning towards the Cryo because the fans are located in the back where the intakes are on the bottom of the 6860, but it says you can't use it on your lap very well, which would defeat the purpose of it really. I mean I suppose I COULD use it on my lap but I would block 2 of the 3 vents most likely.

you could always reverse the fans direction so that it pushes air up into the laptop and see if it makes a difference.
