Machine's getting long in the tooth...

Is $150 for a used x7900 C2E CPU a decent deal? I have no real need for a MaxPerf X9000 CPU...

Also was looking at a 320GB Sata2 HDD, WD Black probably - thoughts?

Biggest question: Win7 drivers... they out there for this beast?

    Cheers, and thanks!

You're not going to get any real benefit from a new CPU.

If anything buy a 40/60/80GB SSD for OS and programs, that'll give you the biggest impact in performance.

Well the t5550 is slow, you will want to upgrade the CPU, but I would go for a T9500. The difference between a T9500 and an X7900 wont be much, but the T9500 will run a lot cooler.

As soon as you go above 3ghz with that X7900, it's going to be really hot, maybe in the 90's.

What are you doing with your laptop? If you want to improve game performance go for a CPU upgrade T9300/T9500 will be the best price performance ratio. The X7xxx will run hotter and will not be as efficient as the penryn CPUs.

If you want to improve load times and speed up the OS go for a SSD upgrade. I noticed very little difference in normal usage going from the T5550 to the X9000. Games saw a very nice improvement.

    Hello everyone,
I've been using P-6860FX since 2008. I've played Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare 2, World at War. Everything seemed fine. But a few days ago, I've tried to play Mafia II but the CPU (as you know T5550) temperature gets too high and laptop shuts down.
Shortly, I want to buy a new CPU (which stays cool and performance) and I also think that I am going to need a new heatsink. What do you think about that?

    In addition, I found a used T9300 for 115$.

    After edit:
My problem was not the CPU. I removed the CPU heatsink, cleaned it and put a new thermal paste. I tried to play Mafia II again and laptop still shuts down. I also learned that the fan noise comes from under the ESC button area where is left side. I thought this is CPU's fan actually it was GPU's fan. The CPU was located under the numbers buttons where is right side.
I think I also need to clean the GPU but I don't think it's as easy as CPU removing. My question is, how can I remove the GPU and clean it?

    Edit 2:

I looked at "Gateway FX Disassembly Guide" and cleaned the GPU. I played Mafia II. Laptop doesn't shut down. Everything seems fine for now.

Go for the T9300/T9500. They will run much cooler.
