So I just bought a 6860, and so far I absolutely love it. Runs Crysis on high! However one thing has really been bothering me. When playing games, this thing gets RIDICULOUSLY hot. I mean If I put my hand on the exhaust for more than 5 seconds, it is literally too much to handle, it hurts. Right now its sitting on my lap and I was working up quite a sweat while playing CoD4. It hasn't been a problem though. I've played all the way through Crysis, Bioshock, STALKER, Assassins Creed, and over a hundred CoD4 online matches, and it's yet to even stutter. So I was wondering, is it normal for it to run sooo **** hot?
    Thanks in advance.

Get a cooling pad is the best thing i can say to you. Laptops tend to do this and that is a good way to greatly help it.

sorry to sound like a jerk but if you do put your hand on the exhaust of your car, it will be hot. so in other words its normal for your exhaust to get so hot since thats where heat of your lappy is "thrown out". :D

Some numbers would be helpful since a couple of users on here have had their temps all the way up to 95C. You said you had it in your lap, is it getting properly ventilated? If it happened to be on a table or desk when you were playing crysis try elevating the back of the notebook enough so that it can draw some more air through. I've noticed mine drop 10c after I lifted the back up about an inch.

    Lol that sounds painful

Anyhow if your playing games on your lap and not using something to prop up the backend of the laptop then your blocking the vents and your machine isnt breathing and that combined with your own body heat = burning laptop not to mention your cooking your own eggs while using it on your lap so i would suggest atleast get something to rest it on while using it on your lap.

    Tell me about it!

And op, as everyone has stated here, if you have the unit in your lap, youre most likely blocking the intake vents, thus causing your laptop to run hotter than Anna Kournikova. Situations like these are were a laptop cooler (or at least a stand) come in handy.

How do you play Crysis on your lap? Where do you place your mouse? How is that even possible?

This story is off of the news portion of this site. http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4554
Apparently hardware doesn't fail right away in all cases. So I guess all of us Fx 8800m gts owners are going to have to keep an eye on our temperatures.
So far I don't have any problems with my P6860.

Mine ran extremely hot out of the box, with CPU idle of 60s and load of 80s. I would try replacing the TIM with a fresh later.

Mine rarely goes over 65 as well while playing games and idles around 48 to 50c. Do you elevate the back of the laptop to increase ventilation? Or are you allways over 60 c?
The numbers that you gave are still in acceptable limits but seem a little higher than evryone elses numbers (from other past threads i've seen) I would keep an eye on your temperature to make sure they don't increase over time.

It was always over 60c, and the laptop had plenty of room for ventilation. I'm 99% sure the heat was due to poor TIM application, but I never confirmed since I swapped out the chip for a T9300.

Hahaha, no I don't use the touchpad. I just put my mousepad on the right half of the keyboard and use the mouse on that. There's plenty of room because it's a 17 inch. Normally I play at a desk, but I happened to have a friend over so we sat on the couch like that.

Download HWmonitor and tell us your cpu and gpu temps, idle and right after running a 3d game.

I've never touched the exhaust area while gaming, but I haven't noticed the laptop heating up to an extreme level.

My gpu gets up to the high 60's celsius under load.

Well idle the GPU was 54C, and in a CoD4 match it was 67C. So I guess that's normal. When it was on my lap last night I must have been blocking the exhaust or something, that's why it got so hot.

I play WoW with my 6860 in my lap and while it gets hot, it's never uncomfortable. I make sure to position my legs under the right side of the laptop so that the vents on the left aren't blocked. Heh, I play on my couch also, but I use a Bluetooth mouse on the cushion next to me. It actually works pretty well!
