i read that the gateway has the 8800m gts soldered onto the motherboard, and i know every1 says you cant put in a 8800m gtx, how about unsoldering the card? is that possible? and poping in the gtx?

sure it's possible, as long as you got whole bunch of M.I.T students helping you on this.

Well I guess if you don't mind risking your laptop, and you have the money to burn should something go wrong. Then, go for it. Post your results on this page when you do (good or bad). Good Luck.

I wondered about this myself! mainly because replacement purposes for the future. why do they solder cards in? Is it necessary or is it to prevent re-sale?

i dont plan on doing it now, but when i do i will let you guys know, and those extra pipelines add an extra 50% performance increase! i mean theoretically it shouldnt be to hard to do, its unsolder and solder in the gtx.

Do you guys think that say everyting is done correctly would bios have a problem recognizing it?

probably cheaper like nirvana said i do not know, but the biggest reason probably so whn a new card comes out you just have to go buy a new laptop, i mean even now look how hard it is to find a mobile chip, companies dont even sell them! i think nvidia came out with mxm to make it easier for the companies to upgrade the gpu and resell their current model i dont think it was for the consumer which they claim it is

Probably cheaper to get a new laptop- too much trouble to remove the board solder the new board, get the bios to work with it, etc... etc..

    cost of p-6860 + 8800m gtx + modification spending = cost of np5793 with 8800m gtx
so save yourself some time and get a np5793 if you want a gtx

the only other alternative is if they come out with the next gen board that has the gtx chip on board & is an exact copy of the current board we have now (minues the gpu of course).... then you would switch out the mother board. still costly but more doable than soldering out the gpu which has some type of glue around it as well. and a bunch of other things that can go wrong with that...since the pins are smaller than your cpu pins

    dont think so.

and you can only over clock from 2.8 to 3.0 with the x9000 and the temps are low...40c's to 60c's normal usage.
