    Big Mike,

    orders from amazon are not subjected to tax unless you're in one of those states listed in the post above ;) that's why shopping in amazon is cool :eek:

    you betray us so... :( :p

    Yeah the MSI is nice, but just something about the FX that keep me stuck here.

    Curse you Gateway for making a really good computer for cheap...and not giving us 4 USB ports

    Yeah but BY LAW in Indiana I still am supposed to pay Indiana state tax on an out of state purchase, even though Amazon doesn't have to charge it to me as they don't have a business presence in this state. Many states (Ohio where I'm originally from has the same type of law) have similar "use tax" or "excise tax" laws. Most people don't pay those taxes, or pay a small portion of it on the premise that the state hardly ever checks and as long as they pay something no one will notice, but technically many people SHOULD be paying tax on items even when they're bought out of state.

    the fact is if you're paying tax, you're paying. If you're not, you're not... it's simple. If you purchase from amazon, and you're out of those states area, you're not paying..

    and you're wrong... amazon does have a presence in IN

    Fulfillment centers are located in the following cities, often near airports:

    * North America:

    * Arizona, USA: Phoenix, Goodyear
    * Delaware, USA: New Castle
    * Indiana, USA: Whitestown, Munster
    * Kansas, USA: Coffeyville
    * Kentucky, USA: Campbellsville, Hebron (near CVG), Lexington, and Louisville
    * Nevada, USA: Fernley and Red Rock (near 4SD)
    * Pennsylvania, USA: Carlisle, Chambersburg, Hazleton, and Lewisberry
    * Texas, USA: Dallas/Fort Worth
    * Ontario, Canada: Mississauga (a Canada Post facility)

    I'm surprised they dont charge tax just on that basis, but that not withstanding, despite the fact that AMAZON doesn't charge the tax does not make me exempt from being liable to PAY IT.

    http://www.in.gov/dor/3761.htm

    Specifically this section:
    An individual orders magazines, clothing and novelty items from various out-of-state catalog companies. Sometimes the individual orders the items via mail, sometimes via the telephone and sometimes online over the internet. This individual should report these purchases to Indiana as being subject to our use tax of 7%. The individual can report these purchases on their Individual Income Tax Returns (IT-40 or IT-40EZ) or they may use a Form ST-115.

    If I don't pay 7% tax on an out of state purchase legally I'm obligated to pay it to the state of Indiana. As I say most people simply ignore this statute, but it is THE LAW and it is found on your yearly income tax form.

    Wow that laws retarded. I understand why most everyone ignores it.

    We're taxed enough as it is with out insane laws like that trying to pinch the rest of our pennies together.

    I would just ignore it ;)

    Most everyone does ignore it, or pay very little, but that doesn't change the fact that legally speaking it's supposed to be paid. The idea is to "level the playing field" so people are less apt to order off the internet versus buy in state. A bunch of use tax states are banding together to support a "streamlined tax" that will allow them to collect each others use tax, effectively eliminating that potential benefit of online/phone/etc ordering.

    the simple fact would be... would you pay the 7% IN tax if you are not charged by let say: Amazon? I doubt so ;)

    @mtv2004,

    The only drivers I had to absolutely get from outside the driver/app restore disc are

    1. GPU drivers (Since I wanted to use DOX 180.84 already)
    2. Intel's RAID drivers for the Montevina chipset (since I was setting up RAID 0)
    3. Logitech Setpoint drivers for my v200 coz I couldn't install them with the Gateway version of Synaptics
    4. Synaptics own latest drivers for the touchpad, coz of #3 (it's a lower version somehow from what comes from Gateway)

    Other than that, I was able to use the drivers on the restore disc (drivers/app)

    Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and IMHO, that MSI is not my cup of tea with regards to looks. I even don't really like the looks of the p7805u. Then again, I'm in my late 40's and prefer more sophistication (or at least my idea of sophistication is different from a 20's year old!). The less obvious my notebook is, the better I like it.

    While at BB the day I bought the 7085u, I saw a god-ugly Toshiba that was all in clearish red plastic. I guess there's no excusing for taste! Bring on the bling!

    oh come on the Toshiba is a model of discreetness :p

    Thats why i like the FX series. You get to see its a gameing computer with out being too loud.

    But yeah looks are certainly a personal taste thing

    I agree 100%. A lot of the laptops sold via retail channels these days are marketed towards the 'younger' generation and the colors and aesthetics are, to say the least, disturbing. Have you seen some of the skins Dell offers?!! HOLY :eek: !!

    Cmoh, man, nobody wants the 'all-new' skins for Studios! Anyway...they're better, than 'beauty' of Toshiba's monster gaming awfulbook or stupidity of plain alluminium Pear. Ooops. Apple I meant.

    HAHAHA. My wife saw the Toshiba and said it looked like something Fisher Price would put out. Then she saw the 7805 and said that it looked like something someone in their 20s would buy. She said it's not something she would buy but I pointed out the price tag and the awesome specs and I got what I wanted :D

    Yeah I don't care much about the case, of the 7805u but I figure hey I have the laptop open all the time I hardly look at the back. The keyboard and the lcd layout works for me.

    Well, the Dell "skins" are at least a personal choice, and are more what I would consider "art" than that red plastic monstrosity from Toshiba. Art is an individual thing...some are cool, some are not my style, but all are recognized as art.

    Haha the Qosimo, the guy at the store was like "hey you should check out that Toshiba too, its sweet". I'm about to be 30, but I must look about 18 since I get carded constantly, but I wouldn't be caught dead with that laptop. The FX is still a little too "lookie lookie im a gaming laptop" for me, but I can deal with it. The WASD keys make me laugh too since any gamer worth a salt should know right where they are... At least they picked a decent color scheme and didn't make it crazy, about the only thing I can say for the Qosimo is it looks like it would at least sound good...

    it does indeed have awsome sound for a laptop, but thats its only real amazing factor... the "kick you in the face" everything else kinda kills its appeal for most people though

    my friend has a Qosimo and it is really a funny looking laptop. not my taste. Im just gonna buy the 7805u i guess and get rid of all my gaming desktop rigs. this thing really looks like it can handle all my needs. my desktop rigs only have a 1900XT's so this should be a huge upgrade for me

    Look around a little dude.

    It's a sale price right now. It's confirmed that BestBuy's price in the US for this laptop right now is $1149.99.

    Doesn't mean it's price won't go down or it won't be "on sale" again, but at least next week it will go back to $1149.99.

    If the previous FX's are anything to go by then the price is 1149 with a once to twice a month sale price of 1049. Thats just kind of how best buy does it. Either price is still the cheapest an FX laptop has ever been and the best available so far

    the cheapest and best for value is still tigerdirect's 7811 imho... :D and with the current economy being as it is, I think they will be putting a "sale" sign often to spur sales

    Yeah if you can get a good 7811 then @799 its still the best deal in town.

    But new in box these things are selling even cheaper than the 68xx series so thats a huge deal. (i still cant believe they can sell them that cheaply!)
