I saw a new gateway p-7805u at bestbuy today for $1049.99. The product number is 9172511.
-
It's not on the website... I'll go into work tomorrow and do some research. I'll have some solid for you all by 3pm EST tomorrow (12/23/08), that is assuming the web site doesn't update between now and then.
-
Are you sure it wasn't the 7801U?
Notebook: Gateway P-7801u
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8400
Graphics Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS
Display: 17.0 inch, 16:10, 1920x1200 pixels
Weight: 3.8kg -
I saw 2 of these today at Best Buy. My brother and I thought they were a price mistake and each bought one. He has been playing with his and love it. I haven't opened mine because I could not find any information on it so I want to be able to return it if it's not a great deal. It is definitely a 7805u.
The side of the box shows several specs that are INCORRECT. It shows a WXGA screen but when we opened my brother's in the store before we left it had a WUXGA screen. Otherwise it seems to have the same specs as the 7801u.
Also, the Best Buy associate had no specs for it. I chatted live with and called Gateway directly and they said they don't have any info on it yet, no drivers or downloads. The Gateway tech said it was manufactured Dec 12th and released for sale today. -
-
I wish I could! All I have is what is posted on the side of the box (some of which is wrong) and what I can see from inside Vista.
-
post whatever you can see .. atleast we will have an idea

uhmmm..

looks exactly like the 7811 ..
-
i thought 7811 was 512M vram? This has 1G. Sounds like its closer to a 7801.
-
ohhh .. didnt notice that .. wonder wheres the 550$ difference between this and the 7801
-
i can't think of any explanation other than a pricing error.
-
a very good one if it is! .. everyone off to bestbuy!

Yes indeed. I paid 1250 for my 7811 so this seems to be a great deal. I say get it while you can.
-
i have decided to keep mine and have just unboxed it and am now booting it up. i noticed another error: the sticker on the inside palm rest says "1440x900" yet is it actually 1920x1200"
-
-

.. wyld0 where did you buy your one? .. which state?
-
austin, tx.
-
i dont live in the US .. my brothers currently in new york .. ill ask him to check out the best buy there
-
Ridiculous, I just got my 7801u less than a week ago. And newegg doesn't accept returns of any sort. Looks like I'm out a couple hundred dollars. If only I had a heads up...
-
tough luck man
-
So yea the P-7805u does indeed exist, I stopped by at my local best buy and asked about it, the idiots there insisted that if it wasn't on the website they wouldn't hold it. I finally convinced them to enter 9172511 into their computer to check their inventory and lo and behold, they had 2 available. For 1050, this thing is beyond a steal and I recommend anyone out there to rush to their local best buy to see if they have any in stock.
-
What state please ? I am in CT. This is listed at newegg for 1599.
-
)))) Sometimes you gotta shake them really tough for them to move their butts faster

Got mine from the Best Buy at West Hartford, CT

wonder what the specs are
-
We already know what the specs are - it's all in the thread.
-
yeah - pretty much the same specs as every other model .. wonder whats the different model numbers for ..

From information I have gathered from the Best Buy employees and from Gateway directly, I believe the p-7805u might have been a custom configuration of the p-7801u with some sacrifices made in the specs in order to sell it at a lower price point for Christmas. But either by mistake at Gateway or Best Buy, the components that were actually put into the laptop during manufacturing were the same components used on the 7801 instead of the cheaper, lower end parts. This would explain why the box and inner palm rest sticker say "WXGA" and "1440x900" respectively when the actual screen is 1920x1200. Also, when I called gateway and gave them my serial number, they show I have a 2.0Ghz processor when I actually have a 2.26Ghz.
I suspect there will be either a price adjustment or the next round of p-7805u that are shipped to Best Buy will have different specs. -
I stopped in two different BB in PA (near Pittsburgh) and neither of them had one. Also, I had them search the computer (general area) for this model and none are available within a 50 mile radius.
My dilemma is that I just bought an ASUS G50VT-X1 3 days ago (for $999)...its still unopened...thus if I could gt one of these, for $50 more.....it's a no brainer.
I am going to be checking everyday until my 14 day period is over.....if none appear after that I guess I will just keep the ASUS. -
Alright guys, just back from work. The P-7805u is the same 17" chassis, WUXGA screen, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 320GB 7200rpm hard drive, 9800m GTS (1024MB), Core 2 duo P8400. It is not on the site and not found online because it isn't due to technically be out on the floor until 1/04/09. If you have any other questions feel free to ask here or via PM.
-
ok i was thinking about this so if the laptop has higher specs then what it is suppose to have then what happens if something goes wrong with it. they might say you modded this pc or give you lower end part and their would be nothing you could do about it.
-
I would buy one and then when they run out I'd sell it for $200 more.. but I'm afraid that this whole specs description problem will make buyers wary. When I post it as the P-7805u and then they check specs with gateway, and those specs are dif from what I posted, they might not buy, etc.
-
Dang guys,
I have just ordered a refurb 7811FX from Tiger and now you are telling me that for $400 more I could have had a newer, better and new machine !?!
You are killing me !
I will drive to Best Buy right after work (in 2 hours) to see if they have any. If they do I will most likely get it and then return the 7811. Or sell the 7811 for some marginal profit.
God, it is so hard to keep up with the technology.

Right, good I JUST paid off my credit card LOL

Assuming your 7811 works then the 7801/7805 actually isnt better (again except for the hard drive) So take your 400 dollars and buy a 320gb 7200rpm drive (should cost about 100) and use the 300 for savings of a better CPU. -
Doest the P-785u have a better video card with 1gb of ram?

Hello there,
So, I went to West LA Best Buy (Pico/Sawtelle) and had them look up the item. They had two in the back. It seems like they are not yet ready to sell them, but since it shows in the system they do. They had trouble finding the computer for me, but eventually it was stashed in the Geek Squad room.
I decided to buy it for several reasons:
1. It has a bigger HDD, and more VRam
2. It is brand new
3. I will wait with opening it untill my 7811 shows up, so I can examine it. If in fact the 7811 is perfect I will just return the unopened laptop for a full refund. If, on the other hand there is a problem with 7811 I will return it to Tiger, again, for a full refund.
4. I got Vista Ultimate upgrade for $99 with the laptop as well, and will not be returning that (probably).
I was thinking of selling the 7811 for a small profit, but since these are now readily available (most of the stores around LA had at least two in stock) the prices and market will go down on the 7811.
Right now I am waiting for my 7811 to arrive so I can see if any of the isues are there.

Both my BB's said...0 on hand and 0 incoming.....anybody who got one of these...what was it showing for the store? -
I looked at the screen, it was showing in stock !
-
I went to 2 best buys. The first one didn't have any, but the one in lawrenceville, nj did. They had 2 in stock - i bought one.
I am terrified to open it because it doesn't add up that it would be this cheap. It costs $1049.
This thread is saying that the display is actually WUXGA... i'm going to wait to confirm that. I don't want to pay a restocking fee if it isn't...
Here is the side sticker:
-
There is a post in this thread that confirms that it is in fact WUXGA, can anyone else confirm that ?
I won't open mine untill I see the 7811 up close and personal.
I have 14 days to return the7508 and 30 to return 7811, I think I am in a pretty good shape. -
The chance of getting an issue on the 7811 is the same as 7805. I opened three of the refurbs I got and all of them had the hinge plastics on etc. They all look and work like brand new. I would deinitly recommend you to keep the 7811 if there is no major screen or heating issue.
By the way 1050 for this kind of a configuration?! The gaming systems are getting way cheaper each day. What is next? SLIs for less than $1K? -
This is why I am keeping the 7805 sealed for the time being. I basically bought it just to secure it in case the 7811 does not work properly.
-
I'm going to try to get that 7811 refurb if it really does come back on the 26th. Otherwise, i'm going to keep the 7805u as long as a few more can confirm that it'll be 1900x1200, not 1440x900.
-
Both mine and my brother's are 1920x1200 despite the outside of the box saying "WXGA" and the inner palm rest sticker saying "1440x900".
