LXW430X0138******* = 1920x1200 screen
LXW430X0139******* = 1440x900 screen
Is it this simple? I Just look at the serial number on the box to determine whether if its 1920X1200 WUXGA or not?
so if it has 138* its definitely 1920 right?
Theres only 4 (maybe less) p-7805u left at my local best buy so i have to hurry to find out how to identify the good ones!
Let me know please so i know what to ask best buy over the phone
Thanks!

I would go by batch numbers as well, as a couple have reported that the serial numbers listed there are not 100% accurate.

Arent the batch numbers just to show the type of screen not resolution?
And what are the chances of my batch # matching one of those? -
The batch number is on one of the stickers on the box.
Mine is on a sticker on the front of the box. -
I used to work in product development for Compaq computers, when ever we needed to make a change in a product run we would roll a digit in the serial number. This way support and warranty knew when and what the change were.
Go with the serial number check it will work. -
Interesting! Nice topic.
Hey the 2887 and 2888 serials worked for the overheating 7811fx so why shouldnt this one! -
Ok thanks guys! I am gona go to best buy tonight....praying that i get the one i want....Do you guys think i can check the display one first to see if it is 1920X1200 WUXGA and if it is then ill ask if they guarantee the one i buy will be the same....and also will i be able to buy then open in front of them to check? and exchange if it isnt the one on display?
They are gona need a ladder to get the laptop so i dont think they will let me go up and check them myself...should i just ask them to look for a box with *138* in the serial number? and then if it is and they take down ill try to see if the batch number matches any of the ones on the list of batch# that i printed...
So is this a good way to check? -
Sounds like a reasonable plan, FutureFXOwner.
Oh, will you be changing your login name once you get it?
-
My 138* Serial Number was a 1440x900 screen. Batch number I012031
I got to keep the box, but swapped it with the Demo model for the 1920 screen. -
But, yes, they should be willing (more than willing, actually) to check the serial numbers on the boxes for you. In fact, if they refuse, I'd be inclined to ask to speak with the manager and inform him (her) that BB stands to lose a potential sale otherwise. -
NO, on a unopened box, once you open the box, they will probably try to hit you with a restocking fee to exchange it.
Look for the units that have been setup by geek squad, it adds about 100.00 to the price. Most people do not want to pay that so these units can sit for a while. Also as these units have already been opened, they will boot these for you before you buy. I was also able to get the setup fee waved on my unit, they just uninstalled the virus software they installed. -
URGENT! @bestbuy
BATCH = I014567
Serial LXW430x 138 0b21502200
You GUYS THINK ITS SAFE TO SAY THIS IS THE HIGHER RESOLUTION?!
LET ME KNOW THANKS -
Can't guarantee, but going by:
LXW430X0138******* = 1920x1200 screen
LXW430X0139******* = 1440x900 screen
it should be, if what we've seen is accurate.
That is a batch number that I dont' see on the list. -
What JohnWhoTwo said (batch # is not on the list). However, all of the batch numbers in the "14xxx" range have been reported as having 1920 screens (see below). Therefore, coupled with the "138" serial, and the other data, I'd be betting it's a 1920 screen.
I014197 ?? 1920
I014198 LG 1920
I014738 AUO 1920
I014846 AUO 1920
I014847 AUO 1920 -
Ok i was just at the store there are 3 left....only 1 was 138....i am very happy about....but i am still worried about the batch number i posted above..cant find it on the list...should i take the risk?? I told the guy to hold it for me ...and ill pick it up tomorrow...hope he does. I will also be buying a $425 gift card from someone for 380 to help a bit with the cost...so if this isnt the 1920 screen then ill have to return it and be stuck with a $425 gift card -sigh-
-
Sorry, can't recall if you mentioned it --> Did the display model have a 1920 screen? If so, it seems to me that you could go ahead and buy the NIB 138 they're holding for you, check the screen before you leave the store (via Geek Squad setup or otherwise), and if it's not 1920, ask to exchange it for the display model. Others have had success with a similar route, so it's worth a shot.
Beyond that, though, if "getting stuck" with a 1440 screen is absolutely going kill you, then you should probably just pony up the extra $150 and order a 7801 from TigerDirect. You'd then have zero doubt about the resolution of the screen you would be getting.
Just my $.02 -
Yeah i agree with you...thats what i planned to do but problem is they dont have the display model anymore...so i dont think i will be able to do an exchange..i think the one i asked them to hold is the last 1920 thats going be in the store, and how can i check the screen before leaving store? Do i ask geek squad to open and check it before i buy? CAN I?
Oh well i think im going to just take the risk and buy it...worse that can happen is i'll have to put the $425 best buy gift card on ebay and lose $40 when returning...
Thanks for the advice -
-
Buy it! now! right now!
-
please let me know how it goes. im getting one in the next week or so. and i want my moneys worth.
-
If you are careful, you can remove half of the round seal sticker and open the box (maybe a blowdrier might help). Although it looks a little cloudy when taped back on... then you can open and check to see if it is any good, if not, then just return within 14 days (FYI, the day you buy it counts as 1 day even if you buy it near closing time)...
If the screen is no good, just go Start Menu>Gateway>Gateway Recovery>Restore System To Factory Default, and put back in box and return. -
Yeah i think the laptop is definitely worth the money....and ill let you guys know the good OR bad news in a few hours....if they didnt hold the one i asked
them to...i will KILL! -
thanks yello i will try to do that!
-
so what serial number did you get 137 / 138
-
138! = 1920
-
I too am going to buy one (hopefully around the 15th), and I don't want to get the lower res screen. What are the chances of getting the 1440x900 using the 138 method?
-

Hey guys.. Am i reading this posy correctly.. Is Best Buy offering two differant screen resolutions for the same exact price? I see this post is about serial numbers starting with 138 having the 1920x1200 screen.. But didn't someone here already post that there 138***** had the lower resolution screen.. What about the notebooks box, i thought there was a white specifications tag printed on the outside of it? Is the resolution of the screen not on this tag, or only displaying the lower resolution? Has anyone spoken with a Best Buy employee about why only some have the WUXGA screen? If so, what is the reasoning behind this?
-
^ If you read the recent posts about the 7805u, you would find out that Gateway decided to only use WUXGA screens in their "first batch" of these laptops. The rest are all as the site specified (1440x900). People are just being picky and trying to be lucky in getting the 1920x1200 lcd.
-
As far as I know, all of the white specifications tags on the P-7805u boxes claim the WSXGA 1440 x 900 screen.
Why Gateway sent out some 7805u's with WUXGA 1920 x 1200 screens remains unknown although it may have been something they had to do to meet certain shipping promises.
Best Buy, especially the folks "in the trenches" on the sales floor, seems to be clueless. Many didn't even know this is happening until we informed them.
The P-7801u specs out with the WUXGA screen. -
I am seriously considering trying to hunt down a P-7805u with a 1920x1200 WUXGA screen... My current notebook has a resolution of 1280x800, totaly sucks for doing photo editing, also fades out in contrast at the slightest angles (which sucks for games as well).. Does the job, but only viewing it at a straight angle.
My older toshiba had the best screen ever.. It was a UXGA 1600x1200.. Everything looked amazing on it... From every single angle, just perfect!
Some say why bother with WUXGA for games, as lower resolution runs faster... True, but even the 1440x900 has to be turned down for like crysis, may as well just get the WUXGA... You can always go down, but you can't go up! -
Just wanted to add another Batch Number.
Got in in Round Rock (North of Austin TX) and the batch numbers were very high on the few ones that was left in the store..
they were all in the I09****
Except for one, with a blue label (instead of the green)
I got it , thinking it would probably NOT be the higher res-version as all the posts I've found have been lower batch numbers..- there's not that many reports of the high batch numbers like mine..
I opened this bad boy up anyway because I had decided I wanted it even if its a lower res screen.. It's just a hassle and a a pain in the a... to try to fight it- restock fee (Bestbuy) etc.
Boy was I happilly surprised--1920 x 1200 !!!! (LG screen-YES!!!)
Awesome, because I DO a lot of graphical work- Photoshop/Painter
Batch:I083133
Thanks everyone for trying to figure it out, hope this helps -

Ran across this thread while trying to figure out a better way to locate an exchange, just wanted to post my results...
first of all, I happened to get a WUXGA screen on my first machine, it was pretty awesome. this made me assume there were still quite a few out there, but after my video card started overheating on the first day and I went to exchange it, I could not find another WUXGA model. These guys were awesome. On my first purchase they actually allowed me to open it up and check out the screen before buying it; then on exchange they let me open all their other machines to try... none of their stock were WUXGA. I then went to a second Best Buy with no luck there either. I finally opted to send it in to Gateway who promised to send back the same unit.
Anyway, my unit was a *139* and batch# I09* and was a WUXGA screen. All the batch numbers I tried afterwards (didn't check serials, didn't know..) were I10*
P-7805u 138* = 1920X1200 WUXGA?
