I bought my refurb last Thursday with a host of file locations errors on the Vista that was installed. So I decided to Install Windows 7(Ultimate) build 7100/64bit on it and see how it works. Here is my system:
Notebook: Gateway P-7805u fx
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8400
Graphics Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS
Display: 17.0 inch, 1400x900 pixels
On startup I have Avast! Pro, Skype and camera assistance running. At this point it takes 1min 25sec from a cold start to Firefox opening the homepage.
Everest shows me 44deg(CPU) and 47deg(GPU) celcius at idle.

ive been using windows 7 on my p7805u for a few weeks now and i love it. great os works perfectly. i was able to get all my programs working i even got a dinosaur game like final fantasy 7 to work perfectly. daemon tools was kinda tricky to get working. the biggest problem i had to get working was the 3d stereo drivers to actually display the anaglyph picture. once i figured out the trick its kinda ridiculous what you have to do to get it working lol but funny though.
the only thing i havent been able to get working is the webcamera although the mic works fine. -
I found W7 to be really awesome with drivers, could usually get things working with it.
I constantly got BSODs and hardware failures even though all my stuff is brand new. Working fine in Vista64 now, but that is one issue, some ppl will BSOD on a regular bases, others wont even once.
Its still early though, I think it will be an awesome OS. -
yeah i have the same problem with the webcam, I click the toolbar thing and nothing happens besides that everything is running great, was downloading daemon tools but.. whats up with it?
-

theres not really anything wrong with daemon tools itself but more of a problem with the sptd driver not wanting to install. if you want daemon tools make sure you install the sptd driver 1.58 first as an admin before you install daemon tools or youll run into a world of stupid restarts.
heres a link to the sptd standalone installer (32 and 64 bit).

so far so good for me. office 2007, google earth, and nero all work flawless. The only issue i have is when I open my laptop (i have lid close to Hibernate) it goes to 800x600. other than that 20+hrs of COD WAW and no issues!! 85fps at 65celcius.

Once I get my 7805u, I plan on making the recovery disks, stress testing it (to see if I need to send it back), and then reformatting it and installing Windows 7 64bit build 7100.
I love Windows 7 thus far. -
is there any solutions for webcam? I really want to try windows 7 but i need to use my webcam at the same time...
-
InfectedSonic Notebook Evangelist
unfortunately i dont think there is a solution to the webcam as ive been trying several different drivers and none of them work. i dunno why since vista drivers for the vid card work but none of the drivers ive tried work on the webcam. i think unless you can find a work around youll have to wait for the webcam manufacturer to release a windows 7 compatible driver or alternatively buy a supported webcam. i believe the manufacturer is chicony

ok i got my camera to work but im not to sure what it was that made it work. i do suspect though that installing the driver for my ps3 eye on my comp made it work somehow but it might be that plugging in a different camera makes it work?
im using the driver that downloads of windows update so all it says in the device manager is usb 2.0 camera. heres a link to the ps3 eye drivers if you wanna give it a shot. the download link is right above the "works on my machine" image.

i gotta warn you though the built in webcam sucks really really bad. the ps3 camera destroys it on frame rate.
as for where i got my windows 7. i got it directly from microsoft. i signed up for the beta tests they chose me and i get the latest versions from them. i am currently using win 7 rc build 7100 but the latest that i am aware of is build 7137 with like a million other number behind that i beleive thats a pre rtm build and not beta. but anyways yeah my win 7 is ultimate i thought they all were? what i dont understand is why in the world they gave me 3 keys? -
Anyone else have an issue with restarts? When I choose restart I get as far as the lights coming on, but no other activity. I have to hold the power button down and restart it that way. Not an issue with me, but something I just noticed. -
There's one new driver for webcam released at 11/2/09 that said to support Window 7. I tried but could not get it to work.
This is the link to download:
http://support.gateway.com/support/...ebcam Driver Version 1.7.31.413&uid=250353624
If anyone has any success please throw in your 2 cents -
I recently installed Win 7 Home on my 7811FX... I will check and see if my camera is working or not
-
I put Windows 7 on my P-7805u FX last Friday and I installed some Windows 7 drivers for the Chicony webcam - it works perfectly fine!
In fact, there doesn't seem to be anything that's not working as it should (I haven't tried using an HDMI cable yet, however)!

migrated over to Windows 7; didnt even realise camera wasnt working (vista drivers installed) until reading this thread. Downloaded new drivers. Works perfectly now. -
The webcam should work fine with the generic drivers included with Windows 7. At least it did for me. I didn't have to download anything special to make it work. The only required items are the intel drivers (for chipset) and nvidia (for video) and you can get those from the respective sites. The nvidia drivers from the nvidia.com site will include the hdmi audio driver. You may need to get the O2 media card reader drivers which I provided a link to them in a prior message.
EDIT: Nevermind. They seem to have a whole slew of Windows 7 drivers on the gateway site now. Go Gateway! Dell never did that. -
I don't seem to get it working. I tried multiple times uninstall and install the driver still.. When the software popup and I click on the camera tab nothing show up but when I click on the video tab it tells me access violation
omg.... -
I upgraded my P7801u to Win 7. My Webcam works but the system no longer recognizes the mic. Did anybody else have this issue?
-
How do I get the touchpad to recognize the scroll options. I know that there is a synaptics driver but I loaded what some people suggested and it still doesn't recognize that function at all. It works fine though other than not scrolling pages on the side.
-
I know this thread is old but I just upgraded to windows 7 and was looking at old gateway posts. I got my webcam to work but downloading a driver off gateway's site. Just go to downloads and drivers and click browse all drivers. Then fill in each drop down bar, but for the model just put in the 7800 series and then go to webcam. Works great now though the interface is a bit different. (Didn't like the old camera toolbar anyway).

Hi every body,
I am a 7805uFX user too ^^, and I think I know how to get that Camera to work ^^. Here you go, hope this will work with you:
1. Download driver that match your OS here Link to site
2. Extract and install that driver using setup.exe file, remember its patch ^^(let's say... C:\tenten\ ^^)
3. After that, some error message will show up, do not worry about it, just click OK to get rid of it ^^
4. Open up Device manager (for those who don't know how to open this, Right click on 'My Computer', choose Properties, then click on Device Manager on the left panel ^^)
5. Look for some thing like "Imaging device" (sorry, I do not remember it clearly)
6. Right click on it, choose 'Update driver'
7. Choose 'Browse my computer for driver software', then point to where you installed driver (C:\tenten\ as above) then follow \driver\64bit(or 32bit as you like)\ ok.
8. Then, ok, install, do all the rest thing ^^...
It worked with me, hope it will work with you, too ^^, good luck, friends -
I may or may not have the same webcam problem, too. When I installed win7 I must've deleted whatever webcam software the computer came with, but I tried testing it using http://www.testmycam.com/ and I got nothing.
These are minor problems but still frustrating...
model: gateway 7805u FX
OS: win7 home premium 64bit (custom install w/o format)
(downloaded all the latest drivers from gateway website and whatever manufacturer ones i could find as of 12/16/09) -
Found about this on CNet
Would make life easier for those who've upgraded to WIN 7 from WIN XP (especially for those who haven't used Vista)
GodMode (All controls(executables) in one folder)
To enter "GodMode," one need only create a new folder and then rename the folder to the following:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} -
edit: okay now I do but that step still doesn't work
I get the software installed and it says to turn on the camera except the driver is enabled and I don't know what I'm supposed to do to turn on the camera -
edit: okay I think I figured out why this isn't working, the driver that has those folders is for Vista not 7
has anyone found a solution that works for Windows 7? -

Anybody noticed that the driver for synaptic touchpad on Gateway's site for Win 7 doesn't support horizontal scrolling. Or is it just me ? It took me 2 months to notice that after i used the snap feature in windows 7. Got it working after downloading the driver from synaptic website.
