I've noticed a lot of new people coming to the forum in search of answers to various questions so I thought, being a newbie myself, to put up this guide for all the other newbies to this wonderful site. First of all, I take no credit for this guide, as I have just copied it from several posts made by SemiGamer. I hope you don't mind SemiGamer, but I found your posts very useful and felt that others would also.
P-7805u GPU Overclocking Guide
1. Download and install the drivers that work best for your system:
Nvidia - http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
or
Dox's - http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=122
(if you need help installing these please see The Defininitive nVidia Driver Upgrade Guide here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=265740)
2. Download and Install NVIDIA System Tools with ESA Support (the newest version is 6.03 however according to SemiGamer's post the 6.02 version was referenced, i don't know if it makes a difference) (Also when installing it's easier to allow the install to create the desktop shortcuts for you)
6.02 http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.02.html
6.03 http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.03.html
3. Double click on the Performance shortcut
4. On the left side, click the + sign next to "Performance"
5. You'll get three options, . Use the following settings:
Core Clock 600 MHz to 710 MHz
Memory Clock 799 Mhz to 950 Mhz
Shader Clock 1500 Mhz to 1750 Mhz
6. Click Save
7. Click Apply
8. Enjoy
According to skysky123 the GPU temp was around 68c
I hope this helps and if anyone has anything further to add, it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't understand, DL Dox's driver, and Forceware? Are they not both Video Drivers?
-
Thanks for the catch flynnaz, I made the appropriate edit. Maybe I should have waited to write this during my 2 toddlers nap time. lol
-
lol, I thought that's what you meant
-
I noticed something weird, maybe its just me when I downloaded the NVIDIA System Tools with ESA Support 6.03 the file showed up as 6.02, I double checked it too. I will look tonight to see if the program itself shows the right version.

Is there a way that we can modify the bios on these 9800m gts's? I wanted to play with the voltage a little (under/slight over) and you can't do that in the ntune software.
I have a p-7811 if that matters. -
Doesn't work for me... Trying to change the clocks at all just gives me a "The changes made were invalid and will not be applied" message.
Ok, seems this doesnt work unless the laptop is plugged in.. Interesting. -
-
Something you guys might want to try is using the ORIGINAL drivers. I have had NO issues at all with the ORIGINAL shipping drivers. I have had some kind of issue with every other "modded" driver. Just my .02.
-
I have de-volted mine and overclocked my 9800 and had excellent results so far.
/Bump this thread =) -
Glad to be of help Sega.
Note: I'd put "Install the drivers that work best for your system.
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
or
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=122 "
As part one, because the 181.20 aren't the best for everyones system, though if its for someone thats never updated their drivers or have never tried out others than the ones that came stock, 181.20 DOX is a good place to start for gaming. And the lastest official Nvidia might be better if they don't plan on gaming. But since this is an overclock thread. Chances are gamers are only going to view this -
-
Why not OC using something native like ntune or rivatuner? Also, the latest dox drivers are bugged. All the occlusion dos is cause glitches and slow frame rates.
-
Nvidia System Tools is Ntune now.
And the new Dox's are simply just not the best for your system. They make mine perform better. -
You should acknowledge that this voids your warranty..or I thought it does

. But in the economy like this I would try anything to save some extra money

Yup. Nice little guide you've got there. +rep for taking the time to put it all together

Here are my results. Works nicely, and for $750.00 I can't really complain now can I?

Congrats Goodspeed.
How high'd you clock them? And which drivers are you using.
I got 9499points out of the 710/950/1750 clocks with 181.20 doxs. -
-
Any heat problem with those? -
, it really doesn't mean all that much. So what I'm basically saying is: "I'm going to try it higher.".
Hey everybody, lets see some screenshots. As the saying goes- Pics, or it didn't happen. -
here ya go and i guess this happened. not sure what it will do in games but i tried some higher settings and couldn't really get through the tests before the driver crapped out. Im using DOX 181.20 balanced. not sure what else i can do to make it get 10k

not really sure what is holding me back i think it processor. just don't seem right i can't hit that 10 mark but o well it plays the games i want and doesn't seem to be getting as hot as my desktop gpu gets
-
-
That'll put you back some points.
Make sure your only running 3Dmark06 when you run the test. -
When i oc and run 3dmark06 the test never runs through because the of an error regarding the display driver.
I get the message "IDirect3DDevice9:resent failed:: Device lost (D3DERR_DEVICELOST)
Using DOX latest drivers. -
-
It makes no sense though, at least in terms of heat, because I monitor it and it is not anywhere near an issue.
I'm in Vista though not 7, so it's not just that. -
Im just afraid of overclocking because gateway doesnt allow acess to the fans. And i really dont want to have to buy a cooler. eh
-
Wow, anyone try this on XP? Both ntune and system performance tools seem to screw the pooch as soon as I accept the agreement. Screen gets all artifacted and can't do anything. Rebooting in safe mode and disabling the service and rebooting and uninstalling seems to be the only way to fix it...
-
-
K so XP users, if you have the problem I did I'd suggest ATItool .27b4, seems to work just fine. (At least with 179.28 betas from the nvidia site under notebooks)
-
-
Scored 9800 (exactly, oddly enough) on 3dmark06 with 710gpu/940mem on XP, since I used atitool I believe it overclocks the shaders linked to the cpu, I didn't run a GPU-Z to see what they were at, but w/e, good enough score for me, on XP I suspect you could make a 10k run happen as I could have definately suicide clocked it higher.
-
-
I tryed to OC my stock with some settings I see here ,crysis crashed in 10 min
so I backed off some and no crash but I cant tell ant better play marks were 9201 OC from non OC 87XX -
-
-
I really wish setfsb or clockgen or the like worked on these babies, I really think the P8400 has more in it, can't pad mod it either since its a 1066 chip...
-
Just any notes to people who try higher clocks..
If in the middle of a game (or I'm assuming anything that is loading the GPU) your performance drops drastically (if you have a monitor running you will probably notice the GPU is underclocking itself, even under load) then you are OC the GPU to much.
It took me awhile to figure out it was because I set my clocks too high. -
yeah it dumps you to the medium 3d clocks i believe, ATI tool causes this to happen REAL fast if you have the wrong settings, you pretty much have to reboot when it happens, I think there's a way to restart the driver to get the clocks back but i forget how we used to do it.
-
I'm using Nvidia System Tools and you can just set your clocks back as easy as you set them up when you go over.
