Had my XPS p-7805u for about two years now without any issues.
But yesterday while playing a game the FPS dropped, the left side vent was much hotter than usual, and checking with HWMonitor the GPU temp had skyrocketed to about 115 degrees, obviously not good.

So I'm having some difficulty getting to the GPU in the first place so I might get a better idea what's going on, be it a dust clog in the fan, heat sink detached... something. I could really use some experienced guidance, I depend on this gal a lot and can't afford to screw it up.

I've seen the disassembly guides, but no photos I've seen actually point out the GPU chip.

What I hope to do is put down better thermal paste on the GPU, and I need to make sure the GPU fan is even spinning still. If I find I need to replace the GPU or fan, is that even possible?

Thanks for any advice or pointing me to a walkthrough. I'm going to look through youtube videos when I get home from work as well.

You can't miss it. When you pull the mobo out of the bottom, and turn it over, it's the only thing with the heat sink.

Ok, upon further investigation, the GPU fan doesn't appear to be running anymore.

So, in the likely case it's just burned out and not simply a loose connection, can that fan be ordered and replaced? And if so, does anyone know off-hand the specs of the fan, like size and wattage?

    Thanks in advance!

I knew taking pictures would have helped someone down the road.

The GPU is on the right of the picture. This is how it looks when you first take it out.

The other picture is the amount of crappu thermal paste that they put on the GPU. I personally swear by Artic Sliver 5 ;)

This site has all the gateway OEM parts.

Awesome, thanks! I'm going to check my local mom and pop computer store for the Artic silver, I saw yesterday best buy only has the not-well-regarded Dynex goo.
Then I'll clear my desk, light a few candles, put on some nice music and hope I can convince my xps to stay with me.
In all seriousness, though, thanks again.
