    Hey guys,
I purchased a P-7805u around two weeks ago and just got the chance to test it out with some games (busy from school) and to my surprise the son of a keeps locking up after seconds of just being on the MAIN MENU! So far its happened with Mirror's Edge, Crysis, and CS:S. There was one night that I was able to play crysis for two hours and no crashes, but then out of nowhere it started crashing as well. I'm in the process of installing Half Life 2 to give that a try.

I've tried various display drivers, mainly Dox's; Running the 181.22 now, after reading on these boards its the most stable and I STILL have this problem! I've updated windows as much as I can and am just running out of things to try.

It would be great if anyone could throw some ideas out there that I can try, to fix this thing (if you've had this problem please let me know how you fixed it! lol).

Other than that I love this laptop, even with the 1440x900 panel. :D

Oh yeah and I have AVG 8 that I think I'll try to uninstall and see if that helps in any way.

is AVG the only anti-malware on your laptop? if so it should not be giving you issues.

Does your laptop feel hot and have you checked the temperature of your GPU while gaming?

Also have you tried reverting to base drivers?

    Is your GPU Overclocked?

Yes AVG is only anti virus software I have.

    GPU is not overclocked.

What program should I use to check temps at crash?

Laptop feels warm to touch before it crashes, but not extremely hot, I guess. It always seems to crash at the EXACT same spot on the CSS stress test (the only thing i've gotten to run lately).

Well nevermind, it wont show when it crashes, because you have to restart right? HWmonitor wont be there when you restart :\

    (Yay, 900th post!)

Crashes on Half Life 2 also!

I checked the temps and the GPU got up to 50C before crash, may have been higher but couldn't tell because it crashed.

Is there anything else I should try before reformatting?

    If its not your drivers...
    Not the heat...
Either something is wrong with the system or you've got a bad GPU :\
Also you have it set to High Performance, not Power-Saver right?

Yep, have the correct performance settings.

I guess if a hard reformat doesn't solve the issue best buy better let me exchange this POS

Yeah they'll let you exchange it. Just take it in, and run a game infront of them. They'll let you do that. Show them what it does.

As much as I hate reviving old threads in forums (and trying to check around to see if there's any specific rules on reviving zombie threads, couldn't find any on a quick glance)

I've got the same issue, but I'll try to go into a little more detail here on my situation. Initially I had bought a P-7811FX (Same thing as the 7805U, just smaller hdd and half the video card - same chip though), which was experiencing similar issues, complete lockups in multiple games (Left 4 Dead, Burnout Paradise, Civilization 4 Complete, Guild Wars, Lord of the Rings: Conquest), where the frame would freeze and the sound coming out of the speakers would be the same 1/8th second loop, making it sound like a machine gun.

Eventually my motherboard was to be replaced on that unit (both left side USB ports bought the farm), and the company I bought it from decided to replace it for me instead. So now I'm running on a 7805U, and getting the same problem as I did on the 7811. The timeframes for these lockups are intermittent, but on average between 5 and 25 minutes of gameplay before the issue occurs, and never occurs in the same spots.

Here are the steps I've tried using on both units thus far:

Using different drivers (stock, nvidia, guru3d.com, laptopvideo.com), totaling 6 different forceware drivers from 175.15 up to 186.03, all of which produces no change.

Tried switching from VHP 64-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate RC 64-bit, no change.

Full restore of system (with new hard drive), installing no updates or additional service packs, no antivirus software, running on the stock driver, same issue.

Spent approx 14 hours (not consecutively) constantly making 1 adjustment or tweak in the nVidia control panel settings, dialing down settings and reducing quality to increase performance, still no change.

Thinking that there may be something to do with the sound, I removed any and all Conexant HD audio devices, including the Conexant modem, which used the HDAUDIO bus for whatever reason. So even playing with no sound at all, it still managed to freeze up on me (just no "machine gun" sound this time)

I haven't overclocked or modified the hardware in any way, shape or form, and I did eventually try a BIOS update (going from 9.0.11 to 9.0.17 PhoenixBIOS). I'm totally stumped as to what's going on, and that it would happen on not one, but TWO gateway machines. I love this machine, and I really don't want to have to scrap it, but I think I might just port myself over to an HDX18T at this rate...
