I installed Windows 7 64-bit on my P-7805u and it says 4GB ram (2.99 usable). Why is it limiting me to 2.99GB when I'm using a 64-bit OS?

    See attached screenshot.

i wouldnt be surprised if 1GB of system ram has been allocated to your GPU (run dxdiag to verify). That's what has happened to me and i'm essentially working off 3GB of system ram despite having 4GB installed (Vista 64bit SP2).

and lol @ the fact that you have a higher Windows Index than me....I got a X9100 + SSD installed and only managed to score 5.7.

I looked at that and it is already unchecked.

The thing you said about using ram for the video card may be correct. My GeForce 9800M GTS has it's own 1GB of memory that is separate from the ram. However, on the second page of dxdiag it says that my graphics card has 2287MB of memory. So if I'm reading that right then everything is cool because that last GB is just helping out the graphics card.

    Picture attached.

mine says the exact same thing under the dxdiag as yours but on the system page you got mine just say 4gbs it doesnt have the usable in parenthesis.

If this is true that your system is setting aside 1GB of Ram for your videocard, this isnt going to help you at all. There isnt a single game out that will use close to or more than the onboard 1GB of VRAM. Im not sure if that is actually what it is implying though.

well I just forked out £115 for another VISTA Home Premium 64-bit SP2 OEM CD + Windows 7 upgrade voucher form from ebay. Going to install that and see if it fixs my 3GB problem.

Was previously using a somewhat questionable homemade Vista 64-bit Ultimate OEM CD supplied by the ebay seller from whom i bought my p7805u from. I suspect that is the root of the problem.

I did a clean install so that may be part of the difference. I got my RC copy from technet and have a key from there as well.

I did the clean install and I still have the problem. Maybe it's the BIOS. I have 9c.17.00 what version do you have?

I have the same. I wonder if for some reason your system has a 32-bit memory bus. Seems unlikely but usually the 32-bit memory bus caps at 3gb to 3.25gb due to addressing limits. Does Vista 64-bit have this issue?

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

OMG, it was so simple. All I had to do is uplug the laptop, remove the battery, and then find and remove the BIOS battery for a few minutes so that the laptop could reset. Once I put it all back together windows 7 could use all of my ram. I've attached some pictures to help anyone else that has the same problem.
