I can't disable EIST in TS. Someone mentioned that I needed to revert to a different BIOS to be able to disable it. Which BIOS do I need again?
Currently running:
P-7805u
X9100 proc
BIOS 9C.11.00
Win 7 64

P-7805u modded bios is in the Dual-IDA with modified BIOS list.

while you did point me to the right thread, the actual file is missing from the link for the gateway 78xxx afraid to just snag it from anywhere.
looks like i need P78_9C.17.00_EIST_Unlocked.zip
am I correct in assuming this is the bios i need? -

Quick stupid question. Is the 9C.17.00 modded to be able to disable EIST or is it just inherent in that build? Gateway shows the 9C.23.00 as the newest bios available. I've heard a lot of people say that the 9C.17.00 has some cooling differences (fan speeds) and some other stuff. I guess the newest gateway offering doesn't handle the hardware as well as the 17 bios? Am I correct in assuming this? Does the 9C.23.00 address anything important? Am I giving up anything by going to the 9C.17.00? Just want to make sure before I flash. Makes me nervous. thanks guys!

9c.23.00 has 2 issues addressed since the 9c.17.00
1.) if you run Windows 7 and use hibernate thi fixes an issue with the 1394 drivers that hangs at reboot. Prior to the bios update to fix the hang issue you would need to use the 1394 legacy drivers.
2.) The GPU must get hotter for the GPU fan to kick on. It also subsequently kicks off at a higher temp too. With .23 typically you will see the fan kick in at 72c and off at 61c. This is per nVidias spec to help GPU's with solder issues live longer.
Now the P78xx's are not seeing so far a high GPU solder failure rate but earlier incarnations were made well before nVidia came clean about the issue and fix. Hopfully the 1MB versions of the cards were made just afterwards. Gateway though has no way, that we know of, to know what systems may be affected so since the temp modofication is well within spec and shouldn't hurt the systems there is a blanket update for all systems.
EIST by default in all official bios's I've seen is enabled and not able to be turned off with TS. There are various CPU's on ebay for about $200 or so that would give you some more umph. You could go all out and get an x9100 but if you plan to upgrade get it soon as one day in the near future they either will be tough to get or even nonexistant.
Before putting in any money though, look into how long you will keep it before a new system is required. If you are looking at an upgrade soon it may not be worth it.
Now as far as the temps notice none such were released for the P79xx series as by then all solder issues were addressed. So if you have one of the first 78xx's to see the light of day you may want the 9c.23.00 to elongate system life. -

I am running an x9100 in my system now with win 7 64. From the above posts and from other threads, people are saying that if I upgrade from 9c.11.00 to 9c.17.00 I will be able to disable EIST in TS. That's really all I'm aiming to accomplish. All the other stuff is definitely good to know. My temps are fine. I ICD7'd my proc, chipset, GPU and gpu memory. cleaned my fans really well....etc. Temps are good. I DO have the 1GB version of the graphics card and the 1900x1200 lcd that was erroneously marked as a 1440 (if that helps with the timeline of when I bought it. Hoping I don't have any solder issues in the future. Anyway, Thanks for the explanations tanware!
P.S. I payed 150.00 with free shipping for my x9100 on ebay. What an upgrade. Got lucky on the price. -
No version up to 9c.25.00 will alow you to disable EIST without a mod, enjoy the CPU............ -
I ended up going with the modded 17 bios recommended and it works like a charm. Thanks guys!
