Hey guys, I hope I can get some help here. I registered just for this because I couldn't find a good solution just by lurking around like I always have in the past. So here is my problem, and I am 99% sure it has something to do with my computer not getting enough power:
- It does not crash when it is not plugged in and charging.
- The crash does not happen during low spec games and, for some reason, Kingdoms of Amalur.
- Crash happens quicker on MMO games (SWTOR, AoE Online) and some other new games.
- The crash happens without warning. Screen goes black, sound stutters and is kind of loud and beeps. Can not do anything. Requires a hard shut down, holding down the power button.
- HWMonitor says my battery's wear level is 43%. I don't know if the battery causes this or not
That's about all I can think of. I am very very sure it is not a software thing because I have tinkered around in this computer's brains for a long time. I updated things, tried older versions, reinstalled newer versions, tried out different BIOS (that sucked), ran tons of those applications that tell your heat temps and other heat and power measurements. I even got a can of air, followed the take-apart-your-p7805u thread and got rid of every spec of dust in the machine, as well as applied new thermal paste. Mind you, I did all of this after the problem first started occuring, so none of this messing around with my computer has caused it. Oh! And I bought a new power chord and made sure it was for this model and I still get the black screen of beeps.
I'm thinking maybe the power chord was tripped over a few too many times and a piece inside where it gets charged got messed up? Maybe now it doesn't let it get enough power when it is plugged in? This wasn't a sudden thing though, because it first happened with Skyrim I believe, but then it didn't happen for a long time. Then it happened again. And again. Until it got to the point it is at now.
Sooo... yeah. Please share your knowledge because I have done just about everything I can think of except order a new battery or take it into some computer shop somewhere. I want to play something other than Stronghold Kingdoms and Spiral Knights hahaha... *single tear*
-
The battery could be a culprit. My wife's battery finally gave out and has to remain plugged in at all times. I wonder if there's a " tipping point", for lack of a better term, for batteries. Anyone else have experience with this?
Current bios? Nvidia drivers, or third party? Did you disable firewire? This has solved all of my issues with shutdowns during sleep, random restarts, and BSOD's so far.
Have you reformatted lately? Registry errors? Sorry I'm throwing everything at you. When I start to have major software issues I like to reformat. Especially when my hard drive is full of crapware that never wants to uninstall completely. -
Upgrade to the newest Nvidia drivers; Take your battery out and just leave you laptop plugged in, see if you can play games without the battery. Is your system stock or have you modified/upgraded it in any way?
-
Ok so I did a couple things. My bios were current for a but they didn't run the fan as much as I'd like so I reverted to older ones that were made before people complained about the noise. I'm pretty sure the fan was just about all that was changed. I updated to the latest Nvidia drivers. Whats that about firewire? I reformatted shortly after I first started getting the problem and it didn't help. No errors as far as I could tell. My system is stock and I have never messed with overclocking or modifying my computer in any way other than the thermal paste once I started getting the issue. I took the battery out and turned AoE Online on, bumped the graphics to all about medium instead of low so I could see if it crashed quicker and it did indeed crash. So its not the battery then? This is looking gloomy...
-
I own the 7805 also, and I've read on numerous websites, including this one, and I've experienced first hand a firewire issue that has never been resolved. There is something wrong with the drivers or the port itself that causes it to malfunction. Some issues with firewire include:
Computer sleeping issues (computer won't sleep but screen goes black and lights stay on. Force restart is the only fix at that point)
Computer shutdown issues (related to sleep in a way. Mine would power off at some time during its sleep cycle while I was away/asleep)
BSOD's (at least I think so because I don't have them anymore)
I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's somewhat related. I would disable firewire in device manager just in case. If you aren't using it, I never do, you won't miss it, and it has been shown to cause many problems. -
I disabled the firewire and I don't think I have ever or will ever use it. Restarted my computer afterwords and it actually restarted correctly for once, so that was cool. Thanks for fixing that. I made sure it was still disabled and ran Age of Empires Online again and after a few minutes I crashed as fast as ever. =(
I keep picturing something snapped in half inside my computer somewhere around where I plug in my power cord... -
Damn. Sorry to hear about the game crash. At least one problem is fixed... Hopefully someone else can chime in about the crashing.
-
Just curious, what OS are you running? 7 or Vista?
-
I'm running Windows 7
-
You said "It does not crash when it is not plugged in and charging." Does this mean that when it's plugged in and charging it doesn't crash, or that it doesn't crash on battery power?
I'm going to do some looking around too, but I'd definitely look into replacing your battery. Since it only crashes while on battery power, that could be the problem. I guess it might stand to reason that higher powered games try to draw more power all around. Perhaps the battery just can't supply it with enough.
You could try reducing the GPU's core, memory, and shader clocks and run your higher end games on lower settings. That would cause your GPU to work less, maybe preventing a crash. That could be a big indicator that your battery isn't up to the task. -
Here's a link to the exact same issue you're having. Someone on there says he fixed his "black screen errors"...
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gateway-emachines/643016-gateway-p7805u-fx-goes-black-while-gaming.html -
My computer does not crash when it is on battery power. It crashes when it is plugged in. I read all over that thread and other ones that were linked to it. Some people seem to be having a different issue, and some the same. There didn't seem to be a sure fix anywhere. The guy that had a guaranteed solution was for a nvlddmkm error which seems a lot different from mine, but i read until the very end of that extremely long thread and lo and behold I think I found the problem. I made a post there to see if it is even fixable. Something about the computer's memory running on 2D time when on battery and 3D time when it is plugged in. I think 3D is crashing me.
Thanks for all your help on this Dbz! I hope I don't need to bake my computer in the oven or something... -
Hi madd1439! I think you can try undervolting your GPU. This could help or not but it definitely won't do any harm. Undervolting will keep the gpu cool and unstressed. There's a thread with undervolting mod from Andros somewhere on this site. Modding the video bios will take you only 5-10 minutes.
-
Yeah after doing my research I think that is the most logical thing to do. It will basically just be like I am playing on a slower computer than I actually have, right? I guess I am okay with that. Better that than not being able to use it at all. Diablo 3 just entered open beta and Guild Wars 2 is coming out soon =O
I'll make sure to post about how the undervolting goes, and say if it crashes as quickly as it has been. -
Ok so first I went into the Nvidia control panel and turned everything on "Manage 3D settings" down to as low as they would go, and put everything towards performance. I crashed. I went up to "Adjust Image settings with Preview" and selected Use my Preference Emphasizing: Performance. Then I went to Andros' thread and did what you said, antonpetr, and flashed my bios using his stuff which all went smoothly, and I turned on a game. I crashed faster than ever.
This is turning into quite the mystery. I'm starting to lose hope. -
This will probably be my last post. I found this:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/6682418-post103.html
That guy has the exact same problem, and the man responding seems to know what he is talking about. My GPU is donezo. When working with a laptop and something like this fails you can't just buy a new part can you? Its all 1 big piece, attached to the motherboard right? This replacement would be expensive wouldn't it? This... is not my day. -
I'm really sorry to hear this man. I feel for you, seriously. All hope isn't lost, it's just that it'll cost you about $300 bucks to fix.
You could always pick up a P-7915u motherboard. It will have an upgraded graphics chip in the GTX 260m. $300 is almost halfway to a budget gaming PC. But of course if you don't have a monitor already you're looking at that expense too.
I really hope something works out, man. You could see if someone has a spare 7805u mobo, because a few people, at least, have upgraded to the 7915u. I'm sure they'd be willing to part with their WORKING 7805u mobo.
Each of these routes would give you a completely different chip, and perhaps even at a good price.
Regardless, Diablo 3 must be played. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. -
In essence this is not the reball issue of old. The reflow may help as it resecures cleaner power flow in the soldered components. The problem is the components itself. if the Caps can not supply the power surges required for the GPU etc then lockups will occur. This is true of other components as well.
Not a cure all but if early on you upgraded the brick to a 180w this MAY extend the system life as providing clean power all the time to the components can extend their life. How long is arguable at best. I have yet to see an early addopter of the Targus 180 with a dead system and there are/were quite a few of us.
The P79xx is not without issue either. They are known to have USB power issues. I have yet to experience it but have heard of others that have. I again too still use the Targus 180w.
To the point again, once you have worn the components to the point of those black screens it is pretty much too late. A new brick, a reflow or other fixes are most likely just a temporary fix. A new mobo and better power brick are your only cures other than getting a new system all together.( Do not power a new mobo with a 2-3 year old sub-standard power brick)............. -
I used to have issues with P68 model which is known for it's faulty nvidia chips. So I just sent the mobo to laptop service here in Ukraine. They advised to solder the new video chip instead of just reballing/reflowing the old one. I payed $120 for the new chip + labor. This price was regardless of the chip model so it would cost the same for P78. But... I have no idea how much would you pay for this job done in the US... So if it cost too much I'd go with the P79 mobo swap option. You'd have your system work again and get a nice overall upgrade - 2 in 1))
-
Thanks guys, you have been a big help. Its nice to know that I have swapping the mother board as an option, because I will no doubt do that in a few months. For now, I got Nvidia Control Panel and turned everything to performance, got Powermizer manager and turned everything to performance, and got the performance add-on thingamajig to the Nvidia Control Panel and turned my GPU clocks down to 530/630/1300 as I read on another thread. Since then everything has been ok. I played through the Diablo 3 beta and it was grand, even on high settings. Slaud (my computer) may be on his last legs but i will get him a new mobo soon. I appreciate all your help guys! This forum has been the best help I've ever had in this field.
Oh yeah! And turns out AoE Online (the game I was using to test the crashes on) has a memory leak where it leaves the launcher up once you start the game and crashes people who don't even get this issue, so that was unlucky on my end. I tried other games though and no crashes as of yet =) -
I've just installed X9100 on my 7805u. results are catastrophic. Diablo 3 beta final fight is around 8-14 fps (was very good with the old p8400) any places with a packs (or even 2-3) mobs fps go to 6-10, whenever I run around fps fall down. CPU goes to around 80C but ACPI is around 100C! I've got around 1500 points less in 3d mark 2003 with X9100 than I had with p8400. Can somebody help me? I'll probably just through X9100 out of my window
I rlly hoped for a slight performance gain in games...and it is a disaster :{
-
have you undervolted your x9100? also what thermal compound are you using?
the x9100 should have a huge performance boost compared to the p8400. -
Update your chipset driver, I recommend Driverpack Solution to easily find all your out of date drivers: http://drp.su/download.htm -
I've good thermal paste
my bios is 9C.11.00. (when I read posts here about bios changes I'm lost and dunno what to do
I'm downloading this driver pack atm (omg it's huge over 3gigs) also I've tried to use Throttlestop 4.0 but I can not see any way I could possibly OC CPU to lets say 3,2 ghz (its just 140mhz) multiplier is 11,5 and that's it
-
-
CPU change was done in computer service so it is done properly.
-
I have a p7805u and now it's doing the black screen during games thing. Did you replace the motherboard with a p7915u? What were the results, any problems or notes? Thanks
-
One of the Heat Sink's screw holder was LOOSE.
The one on bottom left corner was about 1/8 of an inch off the motherboard and if pulled came completely off.
I decided to use a very small amount of Super Glue on the bottom of the holder and stuck it back into the hole, making it fit firmly again.
Then I went to the Gpu Heatsink and I see the same problem with one of the holder and do the same procedure to get it fitting strong again.
I was going crazy with temperatures around 55-65 while internet browsing etc and overheating while gaming.
I thought my Laptop's components were simply getting old and overheating after much overclocking.
Instead it was simply the loose screws on the heatsink causing air to filter in and cause constant black screens while gaming.
Now I am browsing with Youtube etc. at 46 degrees stable on both the Gpu and Cpu.
I've yet to do some gaming tonight but I imagine my temps will not go high over 70 on the Gpu or the Cpu.
So I hope I give you something to pay close attention to next time you take apart your Laptop, as it may very well be the reason you are overheating and getting Black Screens. -
That could very well be true of alot of systems. If there is not proper contact proper cooling will not occur. This is something every user should look for when attempting repastes or the like. I'll admit this is something I take for granted and just do without asking others to look for assuming they just would.............
-
--Edit: Actually after some more gaming I still seem to be getting the Black Screen crashes even if my temps were around 65 degrees max on GPU and 70 max on CPU. I really don't know what else it could be. Feeling pretty frustrated with these crashes. -
Try setting all the voltages of the gpu bios to 0.9 (Extra,2d,thrtl,3d) using NiBiTor. Seems to have helped for mine.

i have the same exact issue at hand right now, same model laptop with same specs with the same symptoms. When I have my laptop plugged into the stock ac adapter, most games i play crash such as oblivion but is alright wen plyed on low settings. It doesnt crash when i dont have it plugged in even when i play games on maximum settings and for a game such as oblivion, my temp has no issues. My question is, would getting a new ac adapter resolve my black screen issue because ive heard around the forums that the targus 180w has done wonders but it doesnt really target the black screen issue.
Ive had my p-7805u for 4 years now and ive noticed the adaptor sizzling a year ago and its stopped but replaced it with the black screen issue. T-T -
-
Awesome! this is very nice to know since i wanted to know if getting a new adapter would be worth the money, thx!
-
The original brick is not good at all on these. When you have issues it is the first suspect but does not mean it will fix the issue. Glad to hear all is well now though........................
-
But for factory spec P7805u like mine a simple driver upgrade (NB and GPU) solved the problem. I strongly recommend update nVidia driver with last version on nVidia.com (not the gateway, it's too old to be not harmful !!) and don't forget the Northbridge
by the way, if you still had the problem, try playing same games SINGLE!! maybe you have the same problem as mine. It took me a long time to understand that my marvel LAN is the cause of many crashes (even not-running games, when I was data-transfering with other computers). so upgrade it's driver too (and disable firewire), and hope (just hope!) not to having the problems again, as I hadn't a long time.
after all, gateway is not a good manufacturer. I appreciate the price but you have to engineer it again yourself !! having problem with GPU, LAN, Firewire, ... ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!! I don't have time for these! I think I'll buy an ATi-based (AMD-based) Alienware next time. it seems better engineered. many of my friends laptops that have nVidia chip had same problems, but same model with an ATi (AMD) chip is without any problem!
sorry for long reply. lately my laptop is bricked, I think it's BIOS is dead and if it's not dead I can't run BIOS-recovery because the default factory setting is disabled !! how many time I have to seek forums for solving my laptops problems?! I could instead seek forums for better performance and etc.
so here is my last advice: if I were you I would check my BIOS to see if BIOS recovery is enabled, and if not I would reflash it with BIOS recovery enabled (taking the risk). and if my laptop will be fixed, and I could recover my HDDs data, I absolutely turn RAID 0 to IDE or RAID 1 setting, because my game-saves and video and picture collections worth more than adding 30MB/s to a 70MB/s data-transfer HDD!!
bye everybody (Dr. Nick!)
edit: my signature is for long time ago, when I bought the p7805u. Now I'm not so happy about it, and I got rid of NV40 (although it had no problem comparing with p7805u!) -
1st: purchase a higher wattage AC-adaptor that may solve your some other unknown problems causing lack of power.
2nd: undervolt your GPU instead of CPU because 9800GTS is over-specified for our laptops and it also could use a lower operating temp. although I'm not sure if it solves you vast lacking of power.
by the way, first try testing your X9100 with software like sandra to see if it's healthy or not. see it's TDP clock, voltage, cores etc. once I purchase a used T9800 and it was half dead because of overclocking. and of course I returned it to store that I purchased.
and if you wanted to throw your X9100 out of window PLEASE send it for me instead
and could you please tell me (maybe in message) how much X9100 cost you? new or used? from which site? -
The power question is a simple equation. If the voltage drops and the load remains the same then the amps go up which creates more heat which creates more load, etc. .... The stock power supply in good condition will run the x9100 at stock speeds (3.06) for normal use and light gamming. The Targus 180W seems to work for many. Too expensive for me so I grafted the stock plug onto a 19V 150W brick and all is well. Want to test your brick, run your laptop with out the battery. The Gateway P7805u (really an Acer) was the best gaming laptop for the money available at the time of introduction. My x9100 C0 @ 3.458 is at 29c, GPU at 44c, ambient 24c as I type. At this setting there is no game or stress test that will shut it down.
Hands down this is the best laptop I have ever owned. Going on five years (fourteen months with the X9100 @ 24x7) and still running great.
P7805u x9100 C0 @ 3.458, (2) WD 500GB raid, 8GB ram, Nvidia 9800GTS @1920x1200. -
I game with a 3.7ghz x9100 and my gpu @ 733/943/1800 with a stock power adapter
Sometimes, when I'm feeling generous, I leave it on all night to fold proteins.
I doubt you have issues with insufficient power.
Most likely your clocks or temp are too high, or its a combination of both.
Prop up your laptop and have a fan point directly at your gpu.
Take your battery out while gaming -- it generates unnecessary heat.
Most importantly, do not underestimate the importance temperature has on performance.
When I game, I take off the cpu cover and hdd cover and prop up my laptop with a $1 laptop stand and have a fan pointed directly at the bottom gpu vent. I even took off the plastic covering the heat exchanging fins. My media bar is off my laptop to uncover the cpu fan, and you can even take out your speakers to completely uncover the cpu heat exchanger.
The way I see it, the more performance I can get out of this outdated hardware, the better.
Nothing is fundamentally wrong with your laptop, but you have to realize that you are dealing with a laptop with poor cooling out of the box. Overclocking and dropping in a powerful cpu without expecting temperature issues is naive. The x9100 is like sticking a V12 into a hatchback -- at least for this laptop.
Also, CHANGING THE VOLTAGE LABEL IN NIBITOR DOES NOTHING.
Any perceived difference because one changed a voltage label is nothing more than a placebo effect.
You CAN change the voltage by changing the VID.
00, 01, and 02 are the VID's available for the 7805u.
EDIT: added to my post. -
-
My brick DOES buzz.
The frequency of the noise even changes when I scroll down a webpage, because of the change in power draw.
I keep my power brick as far away from my laptop as possible because of the noise.
When I game, I make sure it is in the open and on its side for maximum cooling. I've had it shut down once before because it overheated, but that is very rare. -
@gatewayfx Wow a SUPERBRICK. You must be so proud. Sorry you missed the point of this thread.
-
2nd: cut the smug and sarcasm.
3rd: my 2nd post was pointing out that a brick one might consider faulty has worked perfectly under heavy loads for years, despite the buzzing sound... the brick is not extraordinary and it can/has handled the load of a heavily oc'd gpu and x9100 @ 3.7 ghz without issues. chances are the OP would be wasting money on a new adapter that wouldn't solve his problem.
4th: don't be a ****, bro. this forum is for helping each other.
5th: have a nice day -
-
-
5) I will, thanks.
Your first post was not helpful and in this case a more robust power supply would not be a waste of money. P78 + X9100 + OC + Gaming = 150W minimum. I measured just under 8 amps when testing my X9100 @ 3.99 running stress program.
For you: 1) Chill
I didn't mean to push your button so hard and considering your experience you certainly do have a "SUPERBRICK".
The point of my previous posts that when power supply design limits are reached the voltage drops which causes the amps to go up which creates more heat which causes more resistance which causes more load which causes less voltage and on and on till the power supply shuts down. There is also the issue of the voltage regulators in the laptop which can be damaged when supplied with to low a voltage. It's hard enough getting everything right when installing and setting up a X9100 in a P78 with out banging your head against a inadequate power supply. FYI : Amps = Watts / Volts. More amps = more heat.
Want to do it right? Read Tanware's posts and threads for the last couple of years concerning his P78/79. -
@tanware
the brick buzzes even when my cpu and gpu are downclocked and i casually browse the web. it always has.
@smlindahl
yeah i get a real hard-on sharing computer specs
perhaps i should have said 1.3625V rather than 3.7ghz... god forbid i share what frequency my cpu runs at. I assumed one would have inferred a high voltage without me having to be specific.
I'm asking for you to apologize for your sarcastic post. It was unnecessary and called for.
You have good advice but you dont have to be cynical towards others.
----
Also, I just realized this thread was brought from the dead by Lensmonkey. The x9100 comments from my initial post was in response to no1liv4ever who hasn't posted since april.
regardless, my stock and buzzing powerbrick has reliably powered my processor at 1.3625V and my gpu at the highest voltage (which i believe is VID 00) without powermizer for many hours at a time.
its most likely at its max... but I can only say that so far, it has held up.
my personal opinion for those with black screens is to at least try to lower temps and clocks before spending money on a new brick. -
There, done. Please accept.
The point I was trying to get across was that the stock 120 watt power supply is inadequate for the P78 and X9100 (especially when gaming). This is not debatable but a simple equation W=A * V. If money was spent investing in a X9100 then an adequate power supply shouldn't be an issue. I spent $20 for a M675 19V 150W Gateway AC adapter, grafted the plug from my stock PS and have not given it a thought since. It doesn't buzz, smoke or get above warm. The Targus 180W was out of my price range and a new one is no longer available.
Buzzing PS's are dangerous, please be careful. Makes me wonder about the PS's thermal protection circuit since mine actually smoked.
X9100's VID Voltage Range 1.05-1.2625V. My absolute personal limit 1.35V (testing only).
Side notes: (sarcasm) Not interested in your sexual preferences.(note attempt at humor)
"perhaps i should have said 1.3625V rather than 3.7ghz" ??? I assume you were referring to my @3.99. SB 3.99Ghz and I assumed you were at 3.724Ghz.
Per Tanware: 3.2Ghz is the sweet spot and I have to agree. There is no significant performance advantage of higher clocks. I am just anal about getting at least 10% OC I can run reliably @ 3.591Ghz but chose 3.458Ghz to give me a little headroom. Here I have never thermally shut down no matter what I'm running. I can boot and Idle @ 3.99Ghz but that is where my P78 turned into a toaster and my PS smoked when I put a load on it. This was a year ago. Never tried 3.99Ghz with new PS.
Yes, I am anal retentive. Spent a lot of years getting this way and now kind of proud of it.
No I am not cynical but certainly sarcastic.
Have a Happy New Year. -
alright guys, i got my new ac adaptor today, its a PWR brand with 120w about 20 bucks cause the targus 180w is expensive, played a few games on max settings, LoL, oblivion, a few others and saw a huge drop in cpu usage compared to the stock adaptor. played for a few hours and no black screen! i can finally go back to gaming! =D
special thx to andros for the adaptor info
I still dont know wat the precise issue was for my p-7805u but hopefully those with a "black screen while gaming issue" that are not able understand gpu down clocking, bios stuff, etc, like me who is a complete tech noob and jus wants to play his video games will have a better insight to the problem now
P-7805u black screen crash during gaming
