Happy you are back to gaming like it should be. Without having to worry when the next black screen will come ;)

Im too still getting black screen during BF3 gaming with sound looping (I cant play more than ~10min) that required a hard reboot

    my system 7811fx cpu: C2D T9600 2.8ghz, Ram 8gb
-tested with different RAM (I have two 7811FX)
    -Both fans is working
-GPU temp around 74C when playing BF3
-it happens on Win7 and fresh installed Win8 so I can rule out OS
-tried old and new nvidia drivers - same result
-tested with second stock AC power adapter from my second 7811fx
-vents are clean, and ICD7 applied to CPU, NB, GPU and GPU memory.
-also I tried to lower the GPU clock from 600 to 500, and memory from 700 to 650 - but this time I can play 15min instead of 10min before black screen
-battery in or out same problem

I bought 7811fx in nov 2008, and black screen issue begin to happen only in ~ feb 2012 (before that never had problems with black screen)

I think the only step I should try is to get 150w ac adapter?

What are your cpu temps? Doesn't sound like a brick problem.

    CPU temp (idle + light browsing with firefox): core0 = 24c, core1=24c

Sound to me like you might be going over 74 degrees without realizing, use a program like GPU-Z to monitor and save to log. After crash, check that and see the highest temperature recorded.

If that's not it, it might be the adapter. Try playing on battery for extended periods longer than 15 min and see if you get black screen crashes.

Looks like it triggers when you hit 75. Check if this happens only in bf3 or with other games as well. I recommend using an fps limiter and set it to 30-33 then doing another test.

my concern is it was running at 73c for a few minutes but then within a few seconds spiked to 75c and locked. Now all systems run within tollerances and some run tighter than others. One P7811 may need more power that another with all things being equal. That and having a T9800 (35w TDP) may just push the one a little too hard. Now at 75c, if memory serves, then fan has to bump up in speed. This could be your issue either by the fan is having issues or that becomes the straw (power drain) that breaks the camels back. Remember too increasing the fan speed creates more of a power draw than just running at the higher RPM, especially on a worn out fan (that through oscilation can create electronic noise too). So many possible issues................

I ran into this exact same problem with my gateway (see sig) and finally just gave up, wish i had found this thread earlier. I tried everything, cleaning the laptop, new hdd, updating drivers, cooling pad, etc but to no avail. Maybe now that i have my new toy i will tinker with it some more.

Can someone with the Targus 180w Universal tell me the tip you have? I found some on eBay but they only come with 1 tip of the 3 available and I can tell from the looks or "supported" list, which one will work... for 7811fx?

    thanks

Thanks, Today I received Targus 180w - testing in progress...

UPDATE: ~12min later and Black screen Again!!!

CPU temp was 56 and 57
    GPU temp was 73c max

How big is your power brick from Samsung NP700G7C-S01US compare to this one (targus 180w)? I read review on amaz(o)n.com many complain that its very big and heavy.

The exact same size as the targus 180. The power tip though is different........

Sorry to hear you still have black screens. It could have been fan power draw but I guess not unless the fan itself is an issue. If the fan were bad no matter how many amps it will still overload the circuit and/or create too much noise etc. There can be other issues with the bios too trying to switch memory speeds but this becomes an nvidia issue.

try lowering the gpu clock gradually, here depends on the game, I'm currently playing ACII 500/799/1250 v 0.97 without black screen, but depending on the game I have to decrease further, bf3 for example, gave up playing long time ago, some games allow me to reach more than 75c like to trine, trine 2...

i gaming 28 hours of dead island at 450/595/1125 0,97v reaching at 81c without any black screen

    unexplained :(

I set GPU clock to 500/700/1400 (default clock are 600/800/1500) and was able to play BF3 on all expansion packs for ~45min without black screen but then it happens again. But on AFTERMATH expansion pack I was able to play only ~12 min and I got black screen.

How did you set 0,97v on your GPU?

Damn, I am having the same problem, sometimes I can run bf3 for 3-5 matches, or sometimes I play in one and it crashes. I hope someone find a solution.

Try andros's solution from the other thread, MSI afterburner instead of nvidia system tools, if you have that, and force constant voltage................

yes, it is something to try. The video lock up and/or black screen seem related and this could be the issue...........

Thanks Tan: I will try that.
A friend of mine told me that maybe is the Vram that is causing the crashes.

The P78 vram has an issue when changing voltages and 2d-3d speed, some where with drivers nvidia could have broken system tools where it is not forcing the overclock of memory as a priority and it sees 2d speeds in error. Even if just for an instant once it does this it can cause a lockup issue. Afterburner with system tools removed may be able to force the 3d speeds with voltage as it no longer is a child proccess of the driver or visa versa................

I always used System Tools but I just DL'd AfterBurner. I must say it is quite a bit better thaqn the last time I tried it out. I think it has found a new home with the Samsung.

I am SO happy about MSI Afterburner right now. I played blacks ops 2 single player flawlessly last night on 1280x800 and extra texture settings (no AA or other extra after effects set to high) without a single black screen @ 600core/850mem/1500shader.

Was so mad of not being able to play Far Cry 3 on decent settings and last night was able to play @ 1280x800 textures set to max most settings set to high (except after effects, AA, ssao) extremely smoothly. Something that was impossible even at 800x600 before with settings to low @ lowered clocks with Ntune.

Only thing you have to be careful of is not going on battery while "force constant voltage" is on. It will cause your GPU to try to suck out the same voltage as from the AC and will cause graphical errors. Just make sure you are plugged to the wall securely and you'll be fine, or just change the setting if you know you will be using your Laptop unplugged.

Very happy to have found out about this program and the "force constant voltage" setting, it really saved this still amazing gaming laptop! Hope anyone else having issues follows this advice :)

Ando when you are playing cod bo2, what is your fps? because for me. I have it to the lowest and I get from 50fps and it randomly goes to single to teens. I a getting tired of having problems.

you cannot change the voltage via this guide.

All the guide does is change the voltage label that you read.

That *actual* voltage is controlled by the vid

    Edit:

Also, I bought the 180w Targus power adapter. It's more quiet, but there is no change in performance. Also, the tip only fits halfway in hole... *thats what she said*

I wish the gpu had higher voltage VID's, because I'm sure there is more performance to be squeezed out of it. However, I'm at the limit of clock speeds with the voltage available to it.
