    Hello,

I just picked up a 5300 wifi card to replace the 5100 that is in the laptop. Unless I am missing something, there appears to be only two wires that go to the 5100 from the laptop itself and there are three connectors on the 5300.

If any of you have replaced the stock wifi card with the 5300, is there a extra wire somewhere that I'm missing?

I'm going to guess that if there is no "third" wire, there's no point in installing the 5300 because it won't be hooked up properly???

I apologize if these are stupid questions. :)

You picked up a three antennae 5300 mini card. The stock intel 5100 mini card only has two wires. There's a intel 5300 mini card that only has two antennae at Dell.

Not really. You could opt with just two antennae attached, right?

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of installing the card though? Wouldn't that make it just like the 5100?

Did you hook it up and see if you got better speeds? All my FX's connect at 130, my P-7805u connects at 65

@flynnaz, even with the throughput enhancement tweak? I get 150, with my DLink DIR615SW confirming a 165. (I used to get the 65limit too before I changed that setting)

No, I didn't hook it up. I don't know if it will work with just the two wires. After doing the "tweaks" I was able to get the throughput to 150mb with the 5100. I have no disatisfation with that at all, I just figured the 5300 is supposed to be the better card, and it was cheap, so why not get it.

Boneheaded thing I did though was get the one with the three connectors and not the one with two.

So what did you Tweak? I know to enable the thoughput maxumizer, but what else, that tweak did not work for me.

What's your router? strange that it didn't do a dent in your connection though. Oh well. Hopefully that 5300 will prove to be better.

Its a DIR-655, all my other FX's models connect at 130.

If no one else is having this problem, maybe I have a falty card?

No problems here. I'm getting 121 on my 7805u and 120 on my 6864FX after tweaking the settings as mentioned here. I'm OK with that number. I'm sure it could be higher but I'm downstairs and my router is upstairs under my desk about 50' away and through walls and floors. Pretty good, I think.

Not sure if your card is faulty, but maybe a driver upgrade will do the trick?

Flynnaz did you successfully install the 5300 card? I am receiving mine today and wondering how successful you were or were not.

    Please advise.

    Thank you kindly,

I returned mine, my P-7805u only has two antennas, the 5300 has three hookups. I did alot of reading and fould my Dlink Dir-655 and the Intel WiFi cards have some issues. Its not that bad, but the most I can get after tweaking my Router, and putting the first setting on mjy 5100 to Auto is 150.0, I can live with that. Let me know if you find a better connection :)

The 2 wire Draft n cards are 1T2R and you are limited on speed. the 3 wire as 2T3R will get the full Draft n bandwidth. So 150 with the stock card or any other 2 wire Draft n card is to be expected.

What is the other end of these wires connected to? Could a person string a third wire?

I read somewhere you could, but its hard and messy, I though I could just run a extra wire along the bottom instead of the LCD, but I do not feel like going there at this time. The antennas go up into the LCD. I kinda like there maybe a hidden third wire somewhere seeing how Gateway is using the same FX casing.

    Hey everyone,

I bought an extra antenna and installed a WiFi Link 5300 card and everything worked out fine. I messed up a small section alongside the right side of the keyboard after taking out the top front panel with a little too much force ( :| ) but it worked out pretty fine over all. I positioned the third antenna behind the LCD screen along the path of the white antenna that already comes with the P=7805u.

If you can live without the internal install... just keep the 5100 in there and get an external Alfa awus036h. extraordinarily powerful, good price, hard to beat... i got mine with a 15dbi antennae too
