What chassie is this laptop, is there any other computer out there that you can get parts from? Basically I have a friend that is looking to swap out the keyboard for a backlit one. Thanks

I have no idea, the FX series has always used the same case (as well as the Packard bell IPower notebooks)
I think its just a case that Gateway (Acer) has made for their "high end gaming machines" -
all i know is i saw it at best buys today and its HUGE.... like.... really huge.... it'll definitely cover any school desk with no space leftover lol. but somebody needs to explain the build quality issue because i was scrutinizing the build and couldn't find issues

Guess what im asking is, you have brands like clevo that make a lot of chassies for several comp companys, I am wondering if this is a 1 off machine or custom for gateway

It looks as if the sides do not mate, but I think this is for ventilation. Also the case is a harder glossy and thiner plastic. Nothing wrong with that as plastics continually evolve. One day, not to far in the future, our case material wil be thiner than plastic wrap is today while being stronger that what we have now.
Although expensive to do it today they could make a super light, and what may seem like cheap, carbon fiber shell. -

I knew what you were asking i just dont think anyone knows.
We had a suspicion for a while it was an Arima case that gateway had made specifically for their FX line but it was never confirmed. And i've honestly never seen anything that matches them (save the ipower from pack bell)
So the best assumption you can make is that is a custom gateway(acer) case, and your not going to find anything else like it.
As to swapping out keyboards. As long as the new keyboard is the same frame style as the one in the FX and has a similar connector you should be fine with a swap out. Though back lighting might be a problem if it pulls to much current (the gateways arent known for supporting much in the way of extra power output)
