    Hey,
I was just checking jr.com looking around and I came across a Gateway P-7808u FX laptop with an Intel Quad-Core processor! The specs are kind of a mixed bag, but I'm more excited about the quad-core processor than anything else!

Nice find, I'll be looking forward to the next graphics card refresh in Best Buy to cash in on my accidental damage warranty.

Cool or hot, according to how one looks at it.

Guess one question will be whether it is the same system board or not.

Either way, I'm happy with what I got, considering the price at the time.

I'm sure hoping it's the same main board with a new bios that all of us 78xx owners will be able to download.

JohnWhoTwo, I'm certainly happy with my 7805u as well. $1049 for this rig is pretty tough to beat.

Yeah, like I said, the specs are a mixed bag. And, that 500GB HD is 5400rpm, not 7200rpm.

For most older games that are not optimized for the quad core a T9800 or X9100 is a better CPU. The 7200 RPM drive is better as well.

they also have a second 78xx series up for preorder. seems identical to the specs on the boxes for the 7805u but for the P8600 v P8400.

Penrod- I'm with you on that one, my 7811 is plenty for me and i don't feel like i had to spend too much for it. In a few years (hopefully) when i need a new one I will still look to the Gateways hoping they have great deals on very good laptops still. With a wife a first child on the way it's real hard for me to justify spending that much on what really is a toy for me.

Well, to be honest, the evidence you supplied (testing spreadsheets) certainly DO NOT correlate to this new QUAD CORE unit. Nothing matches--P8400, 512MB video, 250GB HDD...how can this be proof of a new Quad Core unit with a Q9000, 1GB Video RAM, and 500GB HDD?

I say it's more likely you "lucked" into the fact they released a new version.

Let me see...based on some top secret documents I found, I conclude that Intel will be coming out with newer, faster processors, and Gateway will be coming out with some new models. Let's see if I'm right, then I can say told ya so! :D

Thats a pretty lack luster release is you ask me.

Average screen, slow as xmas quad, and large but slow hard drive.

Unless its just sold for cheap i cant see it being that intresting. With the newer Gateway BIOS no longer even supporting overclocking it would even be a waste to get this machine and upgrade to the QX9300 as you would still only be pushing 2.53gHz

I'll be holding out for Nehelam or its die shrink before i go quad...mmmmm 32nm :p

The spread sheets were not the tell tale. The tell was the bios version, you usually do not have to requalify the new bios version to older hardware unless there is a major revision and intended release. The only available hardware that could require a major revision is a quad core and or the TZSO issue of the 11's. The absence of a .13 .14 .15 and .16 usually means they had revisions getting something to work too.

I am so hyped to get a hold of the bios just for future proofing and maybe a quad core well down the line. Also the OP was a correct as he could be with available information and did realize something was up, so like it or not to be fair some kudos is well due.............

    Well....I suppose!

I think that upgrading to a QuadCore is not possible because of the current HSF assy doesn not fit? I would suspect a new HSF assy would appear in that new 7808u?

possibly a new pipe, not sure time will soon tell. They are using the q9000 and maybe that die does fit? The L2 lists as 6mb rather than the 12mb so the silicon may look more like two P8400's than two P9600's on the base. This would mean the present pipe may work. I placed some links below for ebay so you can see what I mean about the die.

Yeah, the Q9000 looks the same as the Q9100 and QX9300 size wise.

Intel's Roadmap had the Q9000 on it, and as far as Quad Cores go, the Q9000 (Low end, 2ghz 6mb cache total) /Q9100 (Medium, 2.26ghz, 12mb cache total) /QX9300 (The big boy, 2.53ghz, 12mb cache, OC'able) are it till Nehalem.

T9900 @ 3.06ghz is the end of the line too for Dual Cores (Basically a locked X9100).

As for the 7808, I am still of the camp that it is a MB revision and no BIOS is going to suddenly Quad enable the 7801/7805's.

and $1799.00 for that? Meh, no thanks.

Generally chip makers don't make a special run to build lower cache parts, they just disable the cache on a higher end part. The cost of setting up a new litho just for a particular part is ussually prohibitive. Frequently the lower binned parts are rejects of the higher binned part (had some bad L2 anyways or didn't perform at the higher clock speed). I'd imagine the Q9000 is the same size as a QX9300. I'd imagine the P8400 is also the same size as the P9600. Also, all P and T series penryns are likely the same parts, the Ps are just binned for better voltage tolerances.

In higher volume mainstream parts you may see some specialization for lower cache parts because the cost of pure silicon wafer is pretty steep as well, but Q series mobiles certainly don't move the kind of volume that would generally merit such a change.

EDIT: May be the camera or optical illusion but the Q9000 looks just a tiny bit smaller in the pics.........

Next FX upgrade that's actually worthy will have one of Nvidia's next new GPU's in it. Probably won't happen until around next Dec/Jan.

Yeah looking at the pics the 9 series is definitely larger than the 8. I would say though as much of a difference as there is it would be that obvious on the Q's as well since they're basically just 2 Ps side by side. The QX9300 looks a little bigger in its pic, but the Q9100 looks the same and it still has the 12M cache.

Pretty crappy if you ask me. The CPU and hard drives are slow. It has bluetooth, but we already know the current FX's can be upgraded to DIY bluetooth for a small price. GFX card is the same.

I'm very VERY happy with the p7805-u. CPU is upgradeable. RAM is upgradeable. Hard drives are upgradeable (solid state and RAID). By the time this thing starts to show its age, there will be a bios that allows overclocking.

Having a CPU that runs at max factory speed with the lowest allowed voltage for the chip also helps. You can get rid of speedstep and throttling completely.

    This thing is a champ.

Do a search on RM Clock and undervolting. There is a big thread on it. I basically use the same setting for batter/ac since it works at the lowest voltage possible. I completely disabled all throttling.

$1699? Not exactly doing backflips with the Q9000, 5400rpm 500gb. 1440x900 is ok, though. :) But imho, it is no longer a great deal.

Still, someone needs to track down the BIOS asap. ;)
