    Hello all,

I've scoured the threads here on experiences with upgrading the RAM from 4GB to 8GB (2x4GB), and found a few people with similar questions that never got a solid answer.

Gateway says that it only currently supports 4GB, but I believe that was back when 4GB sticks were not widely available. Now that they are, there have been reports from laptop users with the same chipset as the P-7811 (PM45) that have successfully installed up to 8GB of RAM.

Note that Intel says that PM45 supports up to 8GB ( http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35515 )

Could this supposed 4GB maximum be due to a BIOS limitation?

Is there anyone out there who has tested whether or not P-7811 supports 8GB RAM? Thanks very much

Is the P-7811 FX DDR2 pr DDR3. Gateway lists the RAM as DDR3-800Mhz, is that even possible. I thought that 800Mhz was DDR2 and DDR3 was 1066Mhz.

That is a typo on their site. PC3-8500 is 1066mhz. As for 8gb support...the PM45 can support it, but there is no 4gb sticks yet...

Don't expect *affordable* DDR3 4GB SO-DIMMs for at least 6-9 months. And if they actually existed right now, there'd be an 8GB option on the W700 Lenovo, and there's not.

The first 4GB DDR2 SO-DIMMs tipped the scales at 350-400 apiece when they came up for sale, just for reference.
