Hi guys,
I purchased a P-7811 FX about ten days ago, with a power supply that had "ridges" in the plastic. They were about 1 mm wide, arranged in a way that sort of resembled a radiator. The ridges weren't very deep though.
However that laptop was faulty and froze up every time I played games with a mouse. Strange, I know. Gateway tech support advised me to return the laptop for another one. I ended up getting the last P-7811 FX on Long Island, NY.
Anyways, my new laptop seems to work fine, but I noticed the power supply has now a totally smooth plastic surface. No ridges! I also notice that when I played Crysis for about 10-15 mins, the power supply became HOT, almost too hot to touch. I can't complain though, because the games actually work!
I'm curious: What do your power supplies look like? Does anyone know the reason for the variation? i.e. are they different specs in addition to the difference in appearance?

that would be your power brick.. the power supply is internal. And, the smoothe bricks seem to be what gateway prefers to ship with the 7811. And, it also seems to work well for most who use it.

Thank you for clarifying E-wrecked! Your the man!

I had the ridged power brick on my first unit as well. Upod exchange I got the smooth one. There doesn't seem to be any difference, heat generation is the same, power output is the same.

I got one from BuyDakota.com. It's not the same unit that came with my 173xl, slightly smaller, but it's 120watt. The power cord doesn't have a ground pin. Definitely a Gateway PS though and I found it using Gateway's part # 2522002R

Ruffles have ridges. So does the power brick that came with my 7811.

You should eat it.

Do we have a concensus which one is better? Which one is newer?
I need to return one back to gateway.
The one with ridges is the one that came with my 7805 . It made a hissing noise that I could hear about 3 inches away, but never caused problems... but maybe in the future.
I called tech support, and they sent me the smooth one. Its about the same width and thickness, but shorter. Also, the plug for the computer is fatter (i think its better). It makes no hissing noise, only if I put my ear on the unit (which is normal).
I did order a Kensington 120W refurb off ebay for $25 for travel, and Targus 180W new from bargainstation.com for $50 shipped for gaming. -
Send one to him and find out ;]
