I'm up now too with XP 64, but can't get my audio to work either. :( Other than that, it seems to work fine.

Suggestions for audio drivers are welcome! :)

Nope, no go. Went away after reboot. I have 3 unknown devices after installing all the drivers in your package, is that normal? I wonder if one is for the HDMI port, the ESATA port, and the built in MIC.

Crap, I wish Gateway would just take the 10 minutes or so that it would take them to make the driver.

Adding the following lines to the WiSVHe5 setup file under [Conexant]

    %HdAudioFunctionDriver.Hermosa5051.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051&SUBSYS_103C30D9
    %HdAudioFunctionDriver.Hermosa5051.DeviceDesc% = HdAudModel,HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051&SUBSYS_107B0698

This will allow you to run the setup.exe file and be able to install the drivers after you get the device to show up by disabling and re-enabling the MS HD Bus Device. If we can figure out how to make the device stay after reboot we have working drivers.

Bump, lets keep this going. Does anyone know how to force a device ID to refresh after reboot in windows? The interesting thing is when I did an XP repair the sound card showed up as needing drivers so I thought it was going to be there to stay. Nobody else is having to disable the MS HD Audio Bus Controller like we are to get their sound cards to display under device manager.

I found a way this morning using a utility called devcon to refresh hardware devices. I wrote a bat file that loads on startup and refreshes the MS HD Audio Bus and this causes the soundcard to reinstall itself without me having to do any of the other work. The only problem is devcon is refreshing A LOT of devices and I can't pinpoint the exact device ID we need so it takes up to a minute on startup for this process to complete.

I will keep looking at it so see if I can find the exact device we need to refresh, then it should only be a matter of seconds on startup to get the soundcard working. If anyone wants a full method to do this let me know.

Hi folks! I am a new 7811 owner, picked it up today at BB for 1299. I am in the process of cleaning the harddrive and doing a clean install of Vista x64. I ran into a few driver install issues and was hoping I can get a push in the right direction.

These 2 still come up under "other devices"
    Mass Storage Controller
    SM Bus Controller

Anyone have the exact name of these drivers i need to d/l?

Also, what results are you all getting on the Windows Experience Index? This is what I seem to be getting:
    Cpu: 5.2
    Memory: 5.9
    Graphics: 5.9
    Gaming Graphics: 5.9
    Primary HDD: 5.4
    Overall: 5.2

Somehow this number doesnt make sense to me. Are these numbers accurate. Keep in mind, this is my first ever experience with Vista. Ive been a XP Pro user with all my past systems.

Anyways, I downloaded all the Vista x64 drivers but the remaining 2 devices wont seem to install. Any ideas / exact driver names would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance
    Tyson

Not sure if this is the best place to post.. but If you keep Vista 64 bit, as that's the only one I've used.. these are the best video drivers period.
    http://pic.xfastest.com/z/NVIDIA%20%C5X%B0%CA/177.85/XFastest%20177.85%20Vista64.exe
This is a download link from Xfastest's site for 177.85 w/modded inf for simple install. Just extract and run the setup.exe. I've tried about 15 different video drivers, and these are the best hands down. No overl****, my default 3dmark06 was almost 400 points higher with these drivers, and if you do overclock they're very stable.

If you would like to try the other flavors for XP or 32 bit Vista, here's their page.
    http://www.xfastest.com/viewthread.php?tid=12852&extra=page=1
Scroll about half way down, sorry it's in japanese but you'll figure it out.
    Enjoy!

EDIT: Another user posted a comment that made me remember one thing. When you reboot after install, you'll get a windows cant find nvsvc.dll error. Easy fix, it's nothing to worry about. Click "Start Button" ->Dialog box type: msconfig -> click ok to edit files -> startup tab -> disable nvsvc.dll -> apply settings and reboot. :)

They are on the application restore CD and can all be installed separately, which is nice. As for the Gateway website, they probably have a part-time outsourced IT guy running it and that's why it's so slow to update.

Also, I believe that Gateway would not officially support WinXP so you may never see those drivers on their website. However, I've seen other laptop companies provide backward support (i.e. WinXP) for their machines like Lenovo and Dell. This probably came about when corporate IT guys wanted to exercise their downgrade rights and wanted to implement XP in their deployments.

Gateway rep told me last week, that the Vista drivers should be public on their support ste between the 10th and 14th of September. She said it typically takes a month for them to post. If they don't post by then, don't kill the messenger! But I will ask for a refund for my paid-for advice if she mislead me :p

I have a fully working sound solution that should work in Vista32, and all XP's. It requires a custom bat file that runs on startup, but I have it down to where it runs for around 3-5 seconds in the background and you can't even notice. I fully tested the audio including the headphone jack and line in and everything is functioning.

Let me know if you guys want a write up.

Yeah for any of you who purchased this computer within the last 14 days, it's on sale at best buy for $1249 or $200 off! (i missed the price matching by 3 days ug = ( )

anyway i haven't checked all the links in the thead yet but i just downloaded the xfastest 177.85 for x64 and i'll try them soon to see if i get a performance increase in crysis.

last time i checked this thread you guys had all the winxp32 drivers working except the audio stuff. Does anyone have a complete list yet of winxp32 drivers for the p-7811 yet? (i'm considering a dual-boot configuration on a seperate HDD, or changing to xp32 completely.)

Plus last question do any of you have experience with ghost or any other imaging software? i want to ghost out my system before i try converting to xp or dual-boot config.

I highly recommend Acronis for making "ghost" images. They have a fully functional 15-30 day trial that's as easy as can be to use. I actually hooked up my new bare drive via USB, ran acronis, it made a duplicate of my primary drive on the bare drive, including bootfile and everything. It makes a mirror copy of the drive you copy from. Of course, you can tweak incase you want to just backup. Took about an hour after I hit the start button, and it couldn't have been any easier. Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 - google and you'll find it.. or i think acronis.com was their website.

This is how I got sound to work in Windows XP 32-bit. Takes a little bit of work but should work for anyone if you modify the driver package you are using. If someone wants to provide me with the ini files from their OS drivers I will modify them for you to install.

1.) Download this KB file and install it: http://rapidshare.com/files/142270357/kb888111.zip.html

2.) Reboot the laptop once installation is compelte

3.) Ignore any found new hardware messages if they pop up (click cancel.) Go to my computer and select manage then go to Device Manager, go to System Devices and expand this selection.

4.) Locate the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio and select it. Then up at the top menu bar you will see an option to disable the device. Go ahead and disable and then re-enable the device. This should cause 3 more unknown devices to pop up.

5.) Download my modified driver installer here http://rapidshare.com/files/142269773/rancid7811fx.zip.html and unzip the installer package. Go into the XP32 directory and run setup.exe

6.) After you run setup the modified ini file should pick up your audio device and install it. You can verify this by seeing if Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221 is now listed under Sound, video, and game controllers. If it is you are good to continue.

7.) You will have 3 unknown devices, an extra HD audio device, and a modem device. DISABLE the 3 unknown devices and for the extra HD Audio Device you will want to manually install the wisvhe5.inf file in the XP32 directory from the installer package. This will cause the device to appear as an extra Conexant HD-Audio device but it will not start. After you get the warning message the device could not be started DISABLE IT. This will prevent a popup window appearing after reboot.

8.) Download the devcon installer package here http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/1/f/11f7dd10-272d-4cd2-896f-9ce67f3e0240/devcon.exe

9.) Install devcon to any directory (I put it in C:\ devcon to make life easy) and then go into the directory you installed it from My Computer. Create a new text document by right clicking, go to new, text document and name it audiostart.bat.

10.) Edit the audiostart.bat file in wordpad or textpad and add this line EXACTLY like this devcon restart PCI\cc_0403

11.) Save the file and exit then right click the audiostart.bat file and go to Send To Desktop Create Shortcut. Once you created the shortcut go to the Windows start menu, all programs, HIGHLIGHT startup and right click and go to open. A window should open and you will place the audiostart.bat shortcut file you created here. DO NOT move the auctual audiostart.bat file or devcon will not work.

12.) Once the bat file is in the startup folder (the shortcut to the bat file, not the actual bat file) right click the shortcut and go to properties and under Run drop down the selection menu and select "Minimized"

13.) Reboot the laptop and upon logging into windows you should see your bat file running in the task bar called audiostart.bat which will take 10-30 seconds depending on what else you have loading on startup. When you see the little window disappear you will know the hardware refresh is complete and you should have audio.

14.) Congrats, you should now have audio without reinstalling a single driver :)

15.) **Optional** for the HD Modem device if you want this installed simply do a manual driver install and point it to the XP32 directory that you unzipped from my modified driver installer. This will install the correct modem audio driver which should leave you with 3 unknown devices and 1 disabled audio device from the previous step.

Please let me know if you guys have any questions or if I need to explain anything better. For people in 64-bit XP or 32-bit Vista I will need your audio package drivers and the hardware ID of your UAA bus controller to make the same method work.

@ Captain Terror, I myself use Acronis True Image Home 10.0 I used a spare hard drive and use the "backup entire hard drive" feature to make an image of the stock 200gb hard drive to my desktop drive. Then I "restored" the image from the desktop PC to the spare (in this case 80gb) hard drive.

Then I put the clone into the 7811 and booted it up. Voila! no probs whatsoever. After the 14 days to return the PC to BB is up, I'm going to wipe the 200gb drive and install WinXP on it. (don't forget to make the driver and recovery disks first if you plan to reinstall Vista) But then again, you wouldn't need them if you had made the original backup Vista image...

With the Arconis trial stuff can i make a back up and even though it expires in 15 to 30 days can i still always restore to that backup i made? even though it has expired ? . i ask this because i would just like to make one backup not continuous backups . bascically get my OS just like how i like it and then if anything god forbid go's wrong i can restore to that. i just dont have to the need to make weekly or nightly backups so not sure i really need to purchase said software and if not maybe there are free options out there to make a one time backup.

if i we're you...i would make the acronis recovery cd to cover that for you. so when it expires in 30 days, you can use the cd to boot up and restore your images. (speculation of course) i have a paid version

on another note...does the 7811 have a recovery partition or vd/dvd? if so...they may have 32/64 bit and some xp drivers stashed deep with in the recovery sets. this is where i found my drivers for the 6860. just a suggestion and not a statement of fact.

I believe I may have found the resolution to the lockups and BSOD involving Vista on the 7811FX. I've found 3 webpages that reference the same problems which most of us are encountering. Not on the FX, but on Vista. If someone would be so kind as to go into their start button, type compmgmt and hit enter, then click event viewer, custom views, administrative events. Now, I've never had a vista comp show as many errors and such as this one does..seems to be a lot of internal software and hardware issues. Anyhow, after you expand the admin events.. does anyone else see a WMI error, that occured the same time your computer locked up? Event ID 10.. and details say something along the lines of - Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

Well.. I've found a couple of resolutions..and by the way, this is the error that everyone says is locking their computer when gaming, or just browsing the internet..some get BSOD, others just get a lockup without access to Task Manager.

Resolution 1) One person, and only one, says it was because of the RAM..the voltage and timings were slightly off and he was able to adjust those per the manufacturer...problem solved. Now, I can believe that is a possible solution with the 7811FX. Not sure if anyone has paid attention to the CPUZ shot of the RAM.. but the timings and such allow for one more stepping of the RAM to a higher speed. However, the MOBO and CPU aren't capable of reaching it on this computer. See pic for details..notice ram is CL8 and maxes @ 610MHz(x2=1220), where as the MOBO is 1066MHz, *maybe* the RAM is getting caught between a clock cycle and between frequencies sending errors and locking up the whole system. Has anyone tried replacing the RAM? Ok..this is theory. And I have a feeling it may be the issue.

Resolution 2) Another forum has a simple resolution.. and it seems to be more common than the RAM resolve.
Here is the fix. Open a command prompt as an admin and enter the following pressing the enter key after each line:

    net stop winmgmt
    DEL C:\Windows\System32\wbem\Repository\*.*

Now reboot and let the system idle for a few minutes. There will be a couple of WMI warnings in the event log, but thats alright for the moment. Reboot one more time and the error and warning will be resolved.
    From: http://windowsforums.org/index.php?showtopic=392

Resolution 3) This is similar to 2..however a bit more in depth, and this is what I will attempt and post results. I can only do one method, obviously.. so good luck and hopefully this solves a lot of problems. Please let me know! And +rep if you're satisfied with results :)

Please read post 1, and 3, as this is a two part process.

I tried that, but after hitting enter after each line, it asks if I want to stop the service or delete that file and when I type Y it says access denied. I am the admin on the laptop. At least I think I am. I'm the only account on the laptop.

Try the 3rd option.. I just ran it and no more WMI errors. Follow it step by step tho. Turns out the files are in use by WMI..so u have to boot safe mode, disable WMI, delete files, uninstall msdtc, reboot..delete 4 registry entires, re-install msdtc, reboot. Takes like 5 minutes.. :)

Trying to figure out this audio thing is driving me up the wall. I'm just going to pick up an external expresscard audio card or usb. Take that!

USB is preferable to the pile of software-codec crap that is the X-Fi XtremeAudio. It's a bit of a pain in the *** to find, but ASUS' Xonar U1 gives you most of the capabilities of the PCI cards in a compact "puck" package, and the drivers are rather comprehensive OS-wise.

Fire268 - Exactly what is the issue with the sound that you can't get working? I am willing to help to get it going.

Arg, the eSATA port does not work in XP with the current drivers we have. I am going to work on this today and hopefully find a resolution.

Also someone that installs XP *WITH* sata drivers can you check to see if you can get the eSATA port to work? I have a feeling because I installed in IDE mode it isn't going to work but this wasn't the case on the 6831-FX.

rancid: Can you take a screenshot of your Device Manager with System Devices and Storage Controllers expanded? Also, have you installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager?

ashura: Intel Matrix Storage Manager won't install, says the system does not meet the requirements =\

I have a feeling because I did not install the OS with SATA drivers the eSATA port isn't going to work with this chipset, although it did not matter on the previous model. I will take a screen shot and post it.

Rancid, I will test out the eSATA as soon as I can find a cable. Weird that I have a USB 2.0/eSATA enclosure but only have the USB cable. I might have to pick one up at the local Fry's in addition to a USB sound card (as a backup if I can't get the built in audio to work). Thanks for offering to help!

I am now up and running with winxp 32 bit with all the drivers loaded (as listed above) except the Matrix Storage Manager. I slipstream the F6 floppy SATA matrix drivers into my winxp install. I think they are the same as the Matrix Storage Manager from the Intel site except it goes onto a floppy. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Fire: You can get the audio to work, my method should work for you if you use devcon and make a correct bat file. I was going to buy an internal XFI card as well but there is just no point, all the audio functionality can work under XP with the internal device.

Thanks for checking the eSATA, I am going nuts trying to figure this out :(

I might be wrong about this but.. according to the gateway website we now have a driver section with one download, which is bios... funny thing is that the link to it disappears sometimes...

It does exist, but it might be Gateway's mistake?
