I found a p-6860 thread that seemed to conclude that you cant get
TV (to s-video) out of the VGA port with a simple cable adapter (vga-to-svideo). Is that true of P-7811 also? ---has anyone seen this work/not work on P-7811? In other words, is a coverter box required or can you use cable only? Thanks!

i used to use a little converter box on my old...old pc, it was vga to composite/s-video.
to answer your question: yes it can work but you loose quality. (i used the convertor box, so i dont know if the cable only will work)

hmm thanks... My P-7811 also has HDMI out...I only mention that now because I thought a digital signal would just make things harder...so Im surprise to see u suggest DVI...But since you have do you think HDMI to s-video would work? What Im really looking for is someone that has a P-7811 and has gotten s-video (or composite, NOT component) out of either the VGA or HDMI port on it. -with just a cable adapter no hardware.

I dont think that HDMI to S Video would work. HDMI is Digital. S Video is Analog. DVI is both Digital and Analog. I know for fact that VGA to HDMI wont work without a converter box. I use a 25 foot vga w/sound cord to composite with my P4. With my 7805 I would use HDMI, Im using slingbox wireless. Oh and also you wont get anything but 480p/i wth analog.

If you could get it to work, you would have to set your resolution for 640x480 (composite) or 800x600 (S-video). You would also have to figure out how to switch from progressive-scan (how you display now) to interlaced-scan (how analog TV's display).

Newer HDTV sets (whether HDMI or DVI input, even component input) are native progressive-scan with the capability of converting interlaced-scan information.
