Today, I came to the university and wanted to connect to the wireless network on campus (open, no pw required) But then I realized, that the wireless isn't working! I don't know why. Luckily there are computers offered on campus so i tried to find out how i could fix the problem. But here I am. I can't get any further and I couldn't fix it so far.
What I tried:
- Fn + F2
- Reinstall Drivers (Intel, Ralink, ...)
- Switch the Wireless switch
- go to the device manager and enable/disable the wireless
What happened? What can I do?
Thanks for your advice.

Does the OS at least recognize the WiFi card? If so, does the wifi connection utility show your schools signal? Does it connect but provide no internet?
I remember XP having issues sometimes where it wouldn't connect, or it would connect, but only locally. In those cases, I would run CMD, then ipconfig to look at the connection stats, then ipconfig/release, ipconfig/flushdns, and finally ipconfig/renew, and the problem would be solved. I don't remember if that can be done in Vista or not. -
hmm good point
I'm running Vista 64-bit. And no it doesn't connect at all and it doesn't find the network.... As I said when I go to the device manager, i can find it. -
If its not there under the device manager then it might be faulty. Take off the largest cover on the underside of the laptop (after you unplug it and remove the battery of course) and have a gander at the mini pci wireless card.
Just check to make sure its completely connected. Maybe pop it out and pop it back in. If you don't have bluetooth, then you should have an empty slot. you could even try shifting it from one mini pci slot to the other.
If none of those things work and your pc still won't recognize it then your card is defective, I would think. -
hmm my notebook is freakin weird... this morning after carying it in my backpack i tried it again and it worked! but then i switched the switch and i didn't turn back on... after a few tries it worked again, so it seems like the switch is broken or the card is not connected well... What do u think would Bestbuy (Gateway) replace or repair the NB? and i don't have the additional warranty, just the one year thing
thanx for your advice -
I sympathize ... I always questioned what the "hard switch" really did or if it can break. No big deal to put another card in but that switch is a mystery. Maybe it never breaks

I am also having similar wireless issues, but mine has a different symptom.
My wireless has been working great ever since I got my laptop. Then yesterday for some reason, I lost connection to the internet on my home network. The wireless said that it was connected but had no IPv4 connectivity. It showed as being connected, but would not give me an ip address, the status is just blank. No matter what I tried, I cannot get it to give me any ip address. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, the wireless card itself, and connecting to other networks that previously I had no problems with. Every network does the same thing. It will connect and then say limited connectivity, and no ip address. Even doing ipconfig, it shows as just blank.
I am at a loss as to what else to look at or check. I think that my wireless card itself may have gone bad, but it seems to be working. I have not upgraded or changed anything and I am using the latest wireless driver.
Any hints or ideas, or is there somewhere I can just buy another similar wireless card from to install it? I really don't want to have to go to a USB or PCMCIA card for wireless. I like that it's internal. Thanks. -
I am having the exact same problem, the wireless card worked perfectly for a year, then all of a sudden I couldn't connect to my home network. The card can see the network, but no TCP traffic at all will travel through it. Ill post a solution when I find one!!!

i had the same problem with my 6860. i had to do a system restore to a date where my wireless worked.

Did a system restore to weeks before and it didn't help anything. So does anyone know of where I could purchase a new wireless modem or something? I would like to see if it's a hardware or software issue.

You have two major optitions for a start. Intel chipset or Atheros chipset. . Next option is if you want draft-n or not than do you want it built in or use a usb. Use ebay or type it in google and look for shop on google. This is a good start.
