I did some searching around and found a " Home/office 180W Ac Power Notebook Adapter" by Targus and wondering if this will be compatible with my notebook.

The reason why I'm asking is that the adapter that the notebook comes with buzzes and gets a bit toasty; too toasty for my comfort.

Yup, that's the one that everyone is upgrading to. I'm about to buy one today, too.

From which seller? Amazon is selling it for $90 (yikes!).

Does anyone know if the notebook works better on the 180W adapter or what?

I also got mine from an Amazon retailer. It was nice and cheap, only $36 with shipping. Works great, gets warm, but nothing near what to old one was.

Haha. Don't forget to check out all the retailer prices when you're shopping Amazon. Avertec has the best price followed by some guy on ebay.

eBay is one place that I won't touch even with a barge poll. Too many horror stories about people getting ripped off and when you need help, eBay is nowhere around.

I've never had an issue with any online retailer including ebay but it doesn't really matter as they have the 2nd best price. Buy from Avertec and you can avoid ebay and get a better deal at the same time ;)

Well, I ordered it. How easy is it to be able to adapt it? Do I have to use a special pin? Does it come with it?

I'll vouch for Avertec. I paid for standard shipping, and received mine 2nd day. They sent it out literally the day the order was placed. New, retail, working AC adapter. Couldn't be more happy with the fast shipping, and working product, especially for the price.

You're kinda correct. I found it by googling and searching ebay. After I found the Targus AC Adapter that's when I found a post that referenced Dook's find.

Sometimes people can come to the same solution without asking; although it's nice to know that someone tried it first.

It's more powerful. The FX series, particularly the p-7811fx adapters are at their max output most of the time so they buzz and get warm. People are upgrading to fix that.

The Targus AC adapter is easily larger than the original one. The output of the smaller one is 120w and 180w for the larger (Targus) one.

My only complaint about the targus one is how the plug fits into our machine, as its very loose and i tend to move my machine around quite abit so im not sure what damage it could cause in the long run. it wiggles alot from the plug being abit longer then the stock one. its not a major thing but if i could find a simple solution i would do it in a heartbeat.

Yeah that is a problem that was pointed out in the MaximumPC online review of the computer too. Where the plug goes into the machine is a major point of failure in laptops, and the battery makes it so that the plug can't move around naturally. The targus replacement can move around freely, but too freely. I've thought it would be nice to get something to really fix the plug wobble-free onto the laptop, but I think my electrical-tape type of solutions are more troublesome than good. We just have to be extra careful with our power cords on this baby.

i got mine from best buy. When i play games like crisis or other demanding games, the blue l.e.d. goes out on the targus adapter. Best buy told me it was because it is too weak, and i need at least a 125W ac adapter.. can anyone elaborate on this? id like to be sure that its the ac adapter and not something internally before i buy a new one

Yes, you don't want to be using a powerbrick with a lower wattage than our stock one. 125W is the bare minimum, most here have upgraded to the 180W targus.

If the one you bought from BestBuy is still returnable, you should do so.

About to pull the trigger on the Targus 180W power adapter @amazon for $55

Other than for extensive gaming, what are some other benefits over the OEM?

    Thanks

Well for one, the Targus is significantly stronger and more durable than the Stock Gateway one. It doesn't whine, sizzle, or overheat.

Those are primarily the main reason why people switch to the Targus.

I am curious if people had actual failures as a result of the stock gateway power brick or they just don't like the heat and sound?

I am on the fence if I want to buy a new psu or not. Mine hisses something fierce and gets pretty hot but I have not noticed any negative effects.

talent, funny you should ask. I just posted in the other thread.. I feel TZS0 my be an issue caused by the underpowered brick that comes with the 7811. Can anyone confirm if they have had TZS0 issues after upgrading to the 180 watt?

Did you receive your adapter from Bigcity yet? Their website says that it is a refurb. Just wondering if it looks like it was used or does it appear new?

I really wouldn't worry about the sizzle sound. Mine makes that sound non stop and gets hot as hell when I game but I have yet to notice any negative effects as a result.

My first 7811 came with the larger ribbed for her pleasure power brick and it got really hot and loud but i had to return the laptop and when i got my new one it was smaller smooth and doesn't get as hot or sizzle much at all. If ithe stock one works fine for you the only benefit i see is: having a second power brick is always handy and you might as well get a good one for cheap =)

My Targus 180 watt adapter that I got back in October makes light crackling/sizzling sounds now. Is this something that I should be worried about? It's not really loud and there needs to be very little ambient noise to even notice it unless you are right up on it.

I do keep my laptop running pretty much 24/7 hooked up via hdmi to my samsung 40" lcd. Not sure if this would make any difference or not. It's a 7811FX

    Thanks

Wow, thank you for bumping. I'm also looking for a new power supply. I noticed E-Wrecked said he thinks TZS0 overheating might be caused by the 120 Watt supply that comes with the laptop. I can't confirm this, but I can say with relative certainty that that was the case with my old hp. It always had power issues, and the hotter it's adapter got, the hotter it got. I'm definitely not going to make that mistake again.

Also, can anyone post a link to a cheap 180 watt supply? I'm seeing the targus one everyone is talking about, but I can't find one for less than $70.

Oh, lol, I'm just calling it what it is. Although, I guess you're right, that says 160 GB. It's not 160 GB, its closer to 180, so I must have made a mistake when typing. I refuse to call it 200 GB, and frankly, I think it should be considered false advertising to call it that. I mean, if you consider 1 GB to be 1000 MB, then it is technically 200 GB, but why stop there? Hell, why not just call a byte 7 bits while you're at it! It's close enough, right?

So yeah, I'll change my sig to 180 GB. This also reminds me of a funny xkcd comic that I'll try to find.

    Here it is number 394.

any other adapters out there that are a bit smaller. like maybe a 130w-160w one. 180w seems too large and a bit of an overkill.

I've had mine for well over 1 year and no such issues. I now use it on the P7805u as the included PS is defective and I'm waiting on the replacement.

While 180w seems over kill it is as, if not more, effecient as the original brick and mine is cool to the touch.............

I just got one in the mail today from Amazon (Targus 180W). Looks pretty good so far. No cracking, no sizzling, and so far, my 7811FX hasn't burst into flames =D
