    Hello,

I just picked one of these badboys from Bestbuy but I haven't opened it yet. I proceeded to order another Seagate 7200 RPM 200 GB 2.5" drive and the T9500 CPU from newegg.com.

Curious if anyone has installed Ubuntu and dual boot with Vista? I need this machine to double up as a Dynamips machine.

Any inputs would be greatly appreciated!

If you plan to use that hard drive in RAID with your current one then you are going to have issues with installing Ubuntu. Ubuntu doesn't support the RAID that the motherboard creates, so you are forced to do the entire install by hand. ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FakeRaidHowto) But if you don't plan to use RAID then you can easily setup Vista and Ubuntu to Dual Boot.

The P-7811 does NOT support RAID at the moment. RAID is supposedly disabled and no one (so far) has been able to get RAID to work on the P-7811.

Not sure. As royk50 said... your pretty much going to have to install it and try.

On my 6860 i have everything working except the media bar (still havent figured that one out) But with the 7811 having an all new chipset, you might just want to live boot ubuntu and see what happens. If you have a second hard drive for it the only thing you'll be wasting is time to try to figure out how to get all of the system to work.

Worse case is it doesnt yet and you clear out the hard drive

Its not natively supported from Ubuntu, but if you google "intel 5100 wireless driver linux", there are steps on how to install them. I gonna try them later today.

i heard that it works in these intrepid alpha 6 releases.
I tried x86 alternate ubuntu edition and right away i got 1900x1200 resolution, so thats really nice and now getting x64 desktop edition just to play around.

Can anyone post a guide to installing ubuntu on the 7811? I'm linux noob, but this is something i always wanted to do. I'd like to dual-boot vista64(i just did a fresh install) and ubuntu. I also have an extra hdd(WD 320GB@7200), so would it be easiest to install it on a seperate partition from windows?

Anyway, a guide, or any recommendations would be appreciated greatly!
    = )

(i realize this is quite a bump, so mods feel free to smite my post if you want..)

I can help you with the process if you'd like. I have my 2nd HD set as a fat32 as a shared partition between the two systems and i just shrunk my D:\ to install the linux distro.

As far as ubuntu goes, with ibex 8.10 the Wifi will work out of the box, you just have to enable restricted drivers to get the nvidia card to work, but it will no problems... I haven't noticed any major problems, though from what i hear the ethernet plug doesn't work well? idk i've never tested it personally.

just use any old linux dual boot guide, it's the same process on the 7811. from there i can help you answer specific questions if you p.m. me
